Strangest Refereeing Decision Ever??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Simple Answer is Yes; The ref can award a penalty for such an infringement of the rules ie. not retreating quck enough or decent, another strange one is if a 13metrer free is awarded and the defenders on the goal line move off at approach the kicker as they are in breach of the 13m rule a penalty kick is also awarded..

Still in all I have in my decades of GAA seen any of the above enforced in a game.

997471 The team in question were 8 clear with 4 mins left and the opposition were awarded a dubious penalty anyway. The ref evened it up. But it was quite funny that a penalty was awarded for the pick ball. game ended 2-6 to 1-5

Topman500.... The referee didnt award the penalty for the pick ball, he awarded a free for the pick ball and then upgraded it to a penalty for verbals. He explained the situation as Ive outlined it to one of the managers after the match who was as bewildered as we were up in the stand!..

When giving a 13 metre you cant move it to a penalty for dissent , you can only book first player that gives the dissent , then you can send off second player that dissent , but you cannot give a penalty 13 metre free stands .

Your right Dell but the fact still remains that all referees should know this but instead we have instances like the above due to referees ignorance of the rules.

997370 Theres a ref up here who will bring the ball on 10 metres each time a player gives him lip regarding the free. We were playing one day and we won a free on our 20. The opposing team gave him some verbals and we ended up with a handy 20 metre free. He is well known for this practice.

Well he is wrong on two counts there
1. 13 metres should be the penalty not 10
2. that penalty can only be enforced once i.e once the referee has moved that ball up 13 metres he cannot move it up again.

Way back in the day I played an U-15 soccer match and we were 2-1 up going into injury time. One of the opposition had a shot from the edge of the box that came off the underside of the cross bar and was booted clear. The inevitable "over-the-line" debate ensued. To decide the outcome the referee took the ball, walked into our goal-mouth and threw it against the underside of the cross bar. The ball went in so he gave the goal. True story.

You cant send off a second player who shows dissent though Dell unless he is already on a yellow card. A myth among certain people is that frees can be awarded for dissent but this in fact is wrong.

I would suggest that you have never seen any of these things occuring because they are all against the rules. A ref cannot award penalty for a techinal foul (not retreating quickly enough is a technical foul) or dissent. If the defenders on the goal line move off the line to approach the kicker again that are as you say in breach of the 13 metre rule but the punishment for this is not to award a penalty but to award a free kick closer by 13 metre to the opponents goal up to the 13 metre line. A penalty cannot be awarded for these infringements

Remember playing in a Minor Championship match years ago and the ref giving a hop ball. I went in for it and was told I couldn't as I was too tall (was around 6'4" at the time). I argued it wasn't my problem but he still wouldn't let me go in for it and threw it up against two other players. We also had a ref disallow a goal which was headed in to the net. Was at underage again and it was a game which was being won comfortably - ball was on the ground towards the side line so one forward crossed it in to our full forward who headed it past the keeper. Ref blew it up as a foul out saying you couldn't head the ball in.

had a game here in London ,couple of minutes to go we were 4 points up, knew don't concede a goal we win, other team on the attack ball into their full forward, 3 backs get round him, hands in the air , he tries to burrow through falls to the ground, penalty, ask the ref what it was for..... ye wouldn't let him kick the ball was the reply!!!

Played a minor game a good few years ago and the opposition got a free just outside the 45. It was being taken off the ground so one of our players stood 13 metres away with his hands up. Just as the kick was taken, our player jumped and the referee brought it in 13 metres as he said you couldn't jump when the kick was being taken.
Free was being taken again and same player has his hands up. Referee brings it in another 13 metres as he said you can't have you're hands in the air when a free was being taken.
Free is now almost on the 21 yard line. Same player stands in front of the free with his arms by his side. As the kick is taken, our player turns to head back towards our goal and the referee brings the free straight in front of the posts as he said you can't move while a free was being taken.

No surprise that he was on first name terms with the opposition's manager at the end of the game.

If a players abuses you over a free , yes your entitled to send him off and i have in the past . To the rest you cannot move a ball to a penalty for dissent and can be only moved once once free is given...

I see a few of you are mentioning Martin Sludden again. As a matter of interest, I read somewhere in the aftermath of that fiasco that Sludden's report stated that he was about to award a penalty when Sheridan was dragged down but when the ball was in the net, he decided to simply award the goal instead - but that in itself is a contravention of the rules, it's either a goal or it isn't, it's either a penalty or it isn't, a penalty doesn't automatically result in a goal.

But that could have been just internet BS or propaganda I was reading, either way, it belongs way up there in the list of strange refereeing decisions.

Some gas stories here alright. One of mine, at a ladies game there was a bit of a shomozzle around the oppositions goals between one of ours and one of theirs. Instead of yellow carding both girls he decided to throw up the ball between the two. He must have had our girl in the wrong cos he told her that when he was throwing up the ball that she was to win it and hand pass it back to their goalie. He reffs soccer, mens gaelic and ladies football, all badly.

True story i kid you not

Once saw a referee blow up for half time as the ball sailed into the top corner of the net for a goal. Strangest thing ever, the ball was literally about to hit the net when he blew up. Goal was not allowed and everyone in the crowd hadn't a clue what was going on. This in the senior championship and all.

Did he say Sheridan was dragged to the ground because if he did it shows he was totally out of sink with what was happening around him at the time. Anyway that's water under the bridge at this stage.
