Great news for Kerry. GetOverTheBar (Tyrone) - Posts: 1388 - 06/10/2017 10:24:07 2053499 Link 0 |
To be honest the more I think about it the more convinced I am that this guy needs to spend at least one year with our U-20's. It's too much pressure to be putting on a young lad to come into a senior set-up straight out of minor and perform, no matter how much talent he has. Besides, Kerry's FF line is not the problem. Our goalkeeper, full-back line and half-forward are the serious issues for us going into 2018's League. TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 06/10/2017 10:33:53 2053504 Link 1 |
Maybe you're right but are all Kerry supporters as patient as you? I think we all know their not so the pressure on Fitzmaurice to bring him straight into senior will be huge. IMO Clifford will be a Kerry senior next year. What a talent all the same unreal player.

No they are not, I'm already listening to people talking about how he will be the main man next summer. That's crazy, the lad is barely 18. Have you seen the size of Mayo? They made some of our seniors look like U-16's in the replay. If Clifford comes up against a team like that without the proper conditioning he could get hurt very bad. In the same way as rugby has gone, I think the days of the light lad being able to dance around trouble are gone. I'm not saying Clifford is anyway as slight as someone like Gooch was when he burst on the scene, but dominating minor defenders is not sufficient preparation for what senior inter-county is these days. I agree with you the hermit, let David Clifford train with the seniors but play with the U20s next year, although I don't think we have the luxury of doing the same with seanie shea , like you say we need to sort out our goalie get Shane Ryan in there and sort out our full back line and half forwards and we need a runner in midfield.

I'd agree. The physical step up is huge, even more so in today's game. However, a couple of runs in some early league matches might be good for him. The other teams tend not to have a huge amount of work done by then, and the panels are light of some top players. It'll be exciting to see him play next year, be it U20 or Senior. How is he going at club level down there? WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2018 - 06/10/2017 11:44:40 2053528 Link 0 |
Give him another year playing underage football and some football in college before throwing him into the senior ranks. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 06/10/2017 12:00:22 2053531 Link 0 |
Its one thing being a stand out player at minor and completely another thing to making the jump straight into senior. 2 different planets essentially. The guy might be doing the business at this level but it would be grossly unfair to drop him into a senior set up and expect much of him let alone cope with the physicality that the more developed older players would bring. Clifford is a serious talent and he will be a superstar if he decides to stay with the GAA. If Clifford stays with Kerry then he will and should play a big part in All Ireland Championship 2018 heartbroken (Galway) - Posts: 370 - 06/10/2017 12:07:52 2053535 Link 0 |
How to handle Clifford take one look at how Con O Callaghan was handled , its not rocket science Clifford has talent but he was a beast of a man amongst boys , he wont do to a Johnny Copper what he did to the Derry lads if he's thrown in the deep end, on the on the other hand he will most likely develop into a serious player if looked after correctly. Think the problem is itchy bottom time in Kerry , the need to get Sam back may just lead to desperation which may not long term be in Cliffords interests Its a good news story for Kerry but also all Gaels if he stays Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 06/10/2017 12:11:58 2053536 Link 0 |
Good news to hear he is staying put. Now if we could bring in a new goalie, full back line and midfield and a couple of half forwards we will be sorted -). KY4SAM2015 (Kerry) - Posts: 898 - 06/10/2017 13:02:41 2053552 Link 0 |
I don't want to start a war with this comment - so please don't treat it as some slight or underhand insult. Kerry won't really need Clifford until around July next year, will they - realistically? I'm assuming he's already undergoing s+c training ahead of next year now, if not now, certainly in the next few weeks (not really sure if he's involved in Kerry club scene at present). He'll certainly have to be blooded before then, thinking possibly a few league games in latter stages perhaps - There's a chance the lad will have 8 months big work behind him there ready to be unleashed on the bigger pitch of Croke? Stranger things have happened, but I'd agree with you - some of the Mayo and Dublin lads will be far too big for him and that will ultimately be where this lad is judged, even at this stage. Clifford is 6'2" and broad as byjesus. We're not talking about some whippet of a player. He looked like a giant among the Derry fullback line in the final. How do players like Kevin McLoughlin get by in modern times?

Doesn't matter how big Clifford is. It's the size of the fight in the dog that matters not the size of the dog in the fight. He could well take straight into the physical side of inter county football, he definitely has the skills. But he's still a boy up against bigger and smaller men who are experienced in hitting other experienced men as hard as they can. Clifford will have to adapt to that more physical game. Plus he'll have a load more media attention in and outside Kerry. The other thing is Kerry were miles the better minor team for 4 years. If his attitude and work rate are good then Clifford could be a great. But I don't think we should expect greatness straightaway.

Excellent comment Don't believe threes anyone dismissing Cliffords potential , in fact Gaels suggesting caution is an awareness of current demands on players taking a look at Cliffords height and shoulders is stupid beyond belief Two barrels equal size equal height , one is full of water the other isn't you cant tell which is which until you try to lift them similar bone density and muscle mass , Clifford is a boy a pretty big boy , who could and should develop into a beast , but he's not yet Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 06/10/2017 15:20:04 2053609 Link 0 |
Great news that he's sticking around, sound like he has had offers and the report mentions he has some time to play with to make up his mind definitively in future years. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 06/10/2017 18:48:33 2053651 Link 0 |
He's won a Fresher's League with IT Tralee. Does he play for their seniors and are they in Sigerson? GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7290 - 06/10/2017 19:46:48 2053658 Link 0 |

Could be wrong, but I was told by my lad that it was limited(as in only 3-5 fresher depending on how many teams they had)
