Am i very unique?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Hello.

I have read topics on this forum for many years and have a strong interest in Gaelic sports since i arrived in Ireland from Germany in 1996.

To not beat about bush i took up hurling at 40 and play the game since i started at 40, 7 years ago. I'm no Seamuus Callinan and, at first, as the teammates in jest would say 'i'd not hit cow's backside with banjo'!! However i progress from club junior special team and played junioe A hurling at 47 this year.

This story a familiar one, no? The wife, Frau Bild, encouraged me to get involved in community as i was watching too much Fair City.

I'm not sure about unique, age wise, probably, otherwise you are probably in a very small group of people, very small, so well done to you :D

I'd say you could be the "Tom Smith here" of Tipp and Germany De Bild!

Just a little grammar point, you may be unique but you certainly cannot be "very unique"!

Thank you PoolSturgeon. I still have a little difficulty with the language.

Yes i am familiar with Tom Smith from reading here. He is one hell of a man! He has a huge effect on me, gives me girations of laughter!!

Thank you realdub. I admire your boys in blue. They are like stealthy panthers.

I found the game so different at first, never encountered anything like it but i learnt first..stay close to your man and as they say 'pull hard' until i began to master striking from the hand, hooking, strike on both sides, on the run etc. I love to practise the sideline cut.

One of the most joyous experiences in sport for me was when i hit sliotar at right angle with my ash and the ball climbs to the sky. I played gaelic football too when people stuck for players but i jut love hurling!

About a year ago i had my dna analysed. I expected to be 90-95% German with a little Western European or Scandinavian. I ended up 72% German, 26% IRISH and 2% Scandinavian. My Irish friends said an Irish sailor got to a German port at some stage and the family were near Hamburg!! The Irish thing was a big shock, i had the family tree done up to the 1750s...or so i thought ;)

But maybe it is why i connect with the game.

If you pour a full bottle of brown sauce and half a tonne of butter over your spuds that's the Irish bit......or if you are a landlord charging 2 grand a month rent for a shed in your garden...that's also the Irish bit.

Not as unique as you used to be! There are several German hurling clubs now, including a few (Darmstadt, Stuttgart etc.) which are entirely or almost entirely composed of German-born players.

Some friends of mine founded the German GAA federation a few years' back, such is the growth of gaelic games there.

The German National hurling team played in the World Games in UCD last year, got a bit of coverage due to their memorable t-shirts.

Fair play to you for giving hurling a go!

I've seen a lot of fake accounts on different platforms but this has to be the most pointless
