First of all, what happened in numerous instances of the past couple of weeks is not acceptable. The case in Down and Derry where an official was attacked cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

When people talking on here that any club involved in a brawl should be banned, it needs to be determined what classifies a brawl. People have different opinions as to what constitutes a brawl. In my opinion, if there is a 'coming together' of players (not management, subs etc) on the pitch, while not nice to see, I have no issue with that. Flash points can and will occur during games but as long as it is between the players on the pitch then leave it alone. Majority of times it is only handbags and shoving anyway.

However where management and subs are running in, this is not acceptable and needs to be punished. Likewise where players leave the playing pitch, this needs to be clamped down on, while it is the first time that I have ever seen this, a clean precedent needs to be set for this to ensure that it does not happen again and should it occur again that the precedent has been set for a strong punishment.

Where Match Officials, however bad, are assaulted also cannot be condoned in any shape or form. And anybody caught doing this should individually be banned and the club severely punished as they are representing the club after all.

Agree no one wants the game to lose its passion physicality intensity, and we allways have boil over moments and a few lads having to take an early bath, think were all agreed there's a line forgive the pun that shouldn't be crossed

Imagine is a large number of schoolchildren were between those players ands supporters when the fighting started, this story would make the news worldwide and we would be shamed as a nation for allowing this to happen, time to throw the book at every person involved in brawling. I'll give you 1 incident of how wrong our rules are, a player receives a straight red card for a punch or another serious incident, this is an automatic 4-8 week ban, manager walks up to the ref after the game, shakes his hand and wishes him well and says 'any chance that red card can be changed to 2 yellows' this way avoiding the ban, ref says either yes or no. That kind of behaviour by any person is wrong, you do the crime you do the time, how can anybody learn what is right and what is wrong, anybody that is involved in brawls or causing trouble whether players, management or supporters know they won't be severely punished and at least the train of though is lL'll give this ### a good thumping give him something to remember'. What to do in these issues should be fairly simple,
Did this trouble take place on the pitch? If so the ref has to sort it out and afterwards the co board and maybe Croke Park
Did the trouble happen off the pitch either in the stands or on the street outside of the grounds? If so the police and courts have to be involved and take action, co board can also go after the people involved but the 1st port of call is the Gardai and if up north then PSNI. Make them think before they act in future

Would you want your son to be playing in that type of lawless activity? I wouldnt.

Soccer had a hooligan problem in the 80s and we have a hooligan problem now, albeit on the pitch for the most part. It's getting to the stage where every GAA ground will have to have CCTV cameras installed which can cover the entire pitch, footage of which could be used in criminal prosecution if necessary. Maybe JP's donation should go towards that. And "high risk" matches between clubs with known bad blood, even at underage level, will need to have a sizeable Garda presence (or PSNI, although can't see them taking on that role somehow). It might seem like some sort of dystopian future but that's the way we're headed.

The carry on in Limerick this week seems farcical? No explanation for why the appeal was allowed. Seems disgraceful, surely there should be other avenues of appeal for this kind of thing.

Replying To bricktop:  "From my experiences through 30 odd years of playing I don't think it's any worse than when I started out. There were always certain games/rivalries that had the potential to spill over and that's the same today.
One thing that has changed is suspensions though. Back in the day you could have expected a 3 month suspension for throwing a punch or two, now its 2 or 4 match ban depending on the severity and even then it will be competition based and the player can go about his game in the other code or grade. You were banned from all competitions back in the day.

There may have been an unfairness with the older version but I still think we're too lenient in some cases. Our neighbours have had players sent off against us in league games only for the same lads to line out in championship a few weeks later with no real implications and that needs to change.

The disciplinary committees are indeed made up of well meaning volunteers from clubs themselves who by the laws of averages have been involved in similar incidents and the base instinct is not to see too hard of a precedent as my club could be on the receiving end some day.

The GAA need to involve the legal profession to set up a disciplinary process not so full of holes that can be circumvented by both GAA committees to suit certain people and to put clubs off appealing every whim."
Ach leave it out ya dose, always having a go at your neighbours, plenty of boys in your team are no angels and are well able to give plenty of dirt. You have a vendetta against Ballygalget, not so much with Portaferry as you run after the bomber and the sock man etc, get a grip man, you give your club a bad name

Obviously the thread is enough is enough and the video footage sort of tells a story as does the first hand experiences of others , that said I don't think our sport is thuggish, it has its level of scum and we can't brush it under the carpet , but there are thousands of fantastic fine young men and women who play our games , hundreds of games played week in week out with nothing to report but the scoreline , of course when things boil over particularly off the pitch it's going to make headlines, and as a Gael it's very disappointing to see but let's remember the individuals are in a minority thank god

Could start pontificating and being all self righteous but then I'm well aware of the old adage that "he who is without sin may cast the first stone". Off course it's unsightly and wrong and needs to be dealt with and stopped in "every" county.

if a club isnt to be thrown out,at very least there should be PERSONAL fines for officals, substitutes, supporters who get involved.
itd soon soften the hard man from the crowd or the sub if he was going to have to fork out 1000 euro and a court appearance over the matter.

So Cornacon ladies get 2 straight reds and a referee gets assaulted in Galway. On and on it goes but for some on this forum and others in the media it only matters when it's certain teams or certain individuals involved. 3 thumbs down on my initial post proves it as far as this forum goes. I stuck up for Paul Galvin and Diarmuid Connolly on here when I thought they were being targeted for criticism that was over the top or unwarranted, which it was at times. Some of the antics at these recent club games make the 2 lads and others look like saints! All this violent activity needs to be stopped as it's a terrible example to set for the younger players and also because some of it is dangerous, and at times is actually criminal and should possibly be dealt with by police if the situation warrants it.

Take the chip of your own shoulder be more like it lol. Well that rant was certainly a waste of your time since I didn't refer to you specifically,it was more of a general observation about the selective outrage on these issues, but thanks for taking the time to clarify. I'm sure we can both agree that we'd like to see such incidents punished, and mostly for them to become a thing of the past.

Word is that Ballyholland + Downpatrick have been banned from next year's county championship. Cue the appeal and the lifting of the ban.....

It was a league game so not sure throwing them out of championship will stick?
Also a number of players have been given bans only problem with this is if they receive 6 months there not really missing any games as they'll be back in march.
i would have dropped them down a division and given min 12 months bans to players who left pitch to get involved.

That it was a league game should be irrelevant. Throwing them out of the championship should stick if county board do things right and clubs should then see it as a warning. step out of line or more people supposedly representing your club step out of line in this fashion and your main team in the club will suffer the consequences

Apparently the ref used the wrong coloured biro filling out the match report so both teams will get off on a technicality.
