Are you for real, on a scale of 1-10, I'd give the Dublin v Galway match a 4 at best, and Monaghan v Tyrone a very hesitant 5. Football these days is boring, full of athletes who can run up and down a pitch pretty much non-top for 75 mins +. Loads of handpassing, lateral passing, passes going backwards, goalkeepers getting frustated if they have to kick the ball long, no offence but it's dreadful turgid stuff, and the only thing that saved it these last three or four years was Mayo. Give me hurling any day, even association football has more going for it these days than Gaelic Football.

there was one and a half good games over the weekend in senior, I say half because Dublin/ Galway died off after half time, nonetheless Dublin no matter what anyone say are absolutely beautiful to watch. in years to come i imagine ill be telling children of the great Dublin team. i cant see a single fault in them at the moment. the two minor games were clinkers and our neighbours i felt were hard done by not to get the draw yesterday. reality is that Dublin are just too good for football atm. if you took Dublin out you'd be left with a savage championship with maybe 7-8 teams giving themselves a chance of success. but this is how it is, i expect Dublin to win 4 in a row, enjoy watching them as they are a once in a lifetime team and there's little else we can do anyway theweanling (Cavan) - Posts: 414 - 13/08/2018 16:46:11 2132811 Link 1 |
Looking at those videos demonstrates clearly how much football has progressed has progressed in a variety of ways - in skill levels, in tactical approach, in the ability to defend, in ability counter attack at real pace, in the ability to tackle and in the level of discipline that is acceptable on the pitch.

Brilliant weekend? nay, way way too many wides for that. Some great long range shooting some good skills in patches, but a lot of the two games was drawing circles in the grass. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4896 - 13/08/2018 18:22:48 2132861 Link 0 |
Do you honestly believe either Monaghan or Galway counter attacked with real pace ? There own fans are giving very honest assessments and I can tell attacking with real pace is not what they are saying , more probing laborious lateral hand passing , read back on the posts on both games , some lads fair play hurting from a semi final defeat but at able to give honest assessment

Galway were slow on the counter and have lots to work on over the Winter, but I feel the semi appearance was doing justice to where we are at and we had a good year. All the top counties like Tyrone lose a few semis but stick around so their is hope for the likes of Galway and Monaghan. Best to Dublin and congrats on making Final. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1669 - 13/08/2018 19:07:00 2132890 Link 0 |
It was a general comment on how football has progressed and was not, as no doubt you appreciate, specific to the weekend games. However both counties mentioned had devised their particular tactics specific to their strengths. Galway are a developing team and will not be at their best for another year or two. Monaghan obviously felt that they could slow the game down and had the ability to pick holes in the Tyrone defence, which they did but were unable to take the chances created. Unlike in the past, teams are capable of adopting a variety of tactical approaches, even negative ones as we saw in the closing minutes of last year's All-Ireland final.

I thoroughly enjoyed both games! Great scores from all 4 teams and Monaghan yesterday left their all on the field. What more can you ask? carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1821 - 13/08/2018 21:42:30 2132957 Link 0 |
I'd fancy our footballers Vs your hurlers in a game of small ball if the occasion called for it.

hurling bit too easy to score for me and simplistic..lump it into the forward...footballs main problem currently is the lack of good teams...styles being played badly..football when played well is still excellent..often better in person too, tv doesnt really do it justice

Bielsa trains his players 3 times a day to play that way. 3 to 5 times a week for a county manager is a world of difference.

I actually agree with you, much to easy to score in hurling, nearly every attack has a score. As you say, football is still a great game if played by two good teams who are evenly matched. The Dublin and Mayo clashes of recent years were brilliant games, the teams were evenly match. The problem we are facing now is that Dublin have gone way ahead of the chasing pack and its difficult to see a challenger in the next couple of years - hopefully Tyrone prove us wrong and put it up to Dublin like Mayo. Kerry have a lot of potential but going to take a few years and Mayo really need to rebuild.

Nearly every attack in hurling has a score? Lets take AI champions in each code. Galway versus Clare in the semi final. Galway had 43 scoring chances from play and converted 22 of these. Just a fraction under 50%, so when did 1 from 2 ever equate to "nearly every attack has a score? That would have some credibility if the scoring rate was more like 75-80% region And compare football champions Dublin in their semi final against Galway. Dublin had 30 scoring chances from play and converted 20. 66.6% reoccurring, so it would appear its "easier" to score in football..... Ahh but smaller ball = more room between posts ;) jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 15/08/2018 16:09:59 2133641 Link 2 |
I should have qualified that statement by saying there are more scoring chances in hurling than football, I don't have stats but there surely are more attempts at scoring in hurling than football. For example, it is common enough to see scores going over from near the half way line (great skill involved), this is impossible in football. Hurling probably is never going to be defensive as you can move the ball quickly from the back to the front, therefore no time to set up with a blanket defence. I am not an expert in hurling, just watch the big games in the summer, so you will probably find plenty of holes in my arguments lol.

To be honest swapping a Dublin domination for a Kerry one does nothing for the game. Kerry have enough won down the years. Be great to see a few news teams winning Sam.

I enjoyed the football, neither were classics but good games all the same, I think the commentators have a lot to answer for, extremely negative and lacking understanding of the rules it would seem which was highlighted when Marty Morrissey didn't seem to be aware Monaghan couldn't score directly from the restart after the ref stopped the game for a head injury. Telling us how many players are in each half of the field feeds into this negative narrative also, I mean we are watching the TV we can see how many players are in each half. THe football championship has now become the same as the Scottish premier league with one team holding all the money, although at least Celtic travel away from home for half their games.
