That about sums up the Gooch perfectly for me, and a good laugh too. blaming other fellas for suggesting the idea to him also and the charity angle, I think I'd have preferred if he just said I'm taking all the money whatever anyone thinks instead of this way of sneaking around it.

To be fair to Pat (which I rarely am) he has made the point consistently that, if you want to compete with rugby and soccer (which are more or less all-year round high profile sports now) for the hearts and minds of our young footballers, you must maintain a high profile for the GAA for as long as possible during the year. Despite the success of the club c'ships, right through to the various All-Ireland finals, they have limited interest beyond the competing clubs. I suspect that most young footballers, and maybe a lot of other players and supporters, would be unaware of who our present All-Ireland club champions are in any grade. You might not agree with Pat but he has a valid point. (No doubt Brolly would not agree but, then, does he ever agree with anybody?)

The pre league inter county comps should be scrapped and so should the pre season club comps that use up 2 or 3 weekends. Get the clubs started a few weeks earlier with their league and it leaves more room for any delay mid season. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7830 - 18/10/2017 07:41:31 2055920 Link 0 |
For years Brolly has been on a one man mission to try and taint and undermine Cooper's playing career and record. It's very bizarre and quiet pitiful to see a grown and obviously intelligent man use his prominent newspaper column for such petty ends. That such manure as Sunday's piece gets past the editors is a damning indictment of the quality of our newspaper industry. When you think of all the young, talented and qualified journalists out there that can't make any career in that industry these days, forced to work freelance for a pittance or set up blogs in the vain hope of making a profile for themselves, what must they think when they see fella's like this on huge money to write such muck. It must make them sick. But no doubt Brolly has plenty of admires on here and elsewhere, hence why as long as he has a brawing crowd, the circus that is his punditry will run on and on. People should read Mike Quirke's piece in yesterday's Examiner an articulate and well thought out response to the Derry man TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 18/10/2017 09:53:20 2055937 Link 3 |
I wouldn't take it so seriously mate, it was an inventive piece of satire and actually quite funny. Im sure Gooch himself had a good laugh at it. Be good fun if he did a few other players. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 18/10/2017 10:34:40 2055954 Link 0 |
Well I'm sorry username but plenty will take it seriously and they should, it was disdainful muck. And do you honestly think he will do something similar to others, will he be so 'witty' talking about Phil McMahon's new book for example? The Derry man has a serious stick up his a** about Gooch and his career, jealously is a terrible thing TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 18/10/2017 10:44:38 2055958 Link 2 |

It was hilarious. Not all true but not all far from true either. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 18/10/2017 12:02:52 2055986 Link 2 |

It's a shame Joe couldn't have made his point as eloquently as he did last Sunday keithlemon (Australia) - Posts: 920 - 26/10/2017 09:17:33 2058065 Link 0 |

Yeah when he puts his mind to it he can write well. I enjoyed his parody of the Gooch though I most admit. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 27/10/2017 06:30:22 2058449 Link 1 |
Yeah I liked both of his last 2 pieces. In general I much prefer him as a writer than as a tv pundit. I think he struggles to keep his interest on the game at hand and has a tendency to wander off and talk about whatever it is that's interesting him right now. That's perfect for a newspaper column but there's less of a place for it at half time of a big match. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 27/10/2017 10:02:03 2058488 Link 0 |
I agree. He can be quite irritating as a pundit on TV. Like you said he goes off on tangents when all you want is for him to analyse the game you're watching.

I agree. I always enjoy his articles in the Indo, particularly the ones about the club scene and the community aspect of the GAA. He wrote a great one last year about Slaughtneil and all the unsung heroes working behind the scenes that have made that club what it is. On tv he often says something sensational just for the sake of it but his articles are very thoughtful and well written.

I wouldn't agree with going back to that A and B system again. The league is fine as it is with four Divisions. The intercounty league is over before most County leagues start so theer is no conflict here between Club and County.
