There is a right way to hold the hurl ie with the dominant hand. The only difference is that when you use your strong hand to catch it makes you that bit stronger in the air and harder to dispossess when ball is in hand.

When you catch the ball in your weaker hand you're holding the hurley in your stronger hand. you can then better fend off tacklers using your hurley.

If you are right handed and you prefer to strike the ball from your right side with your left hand on top like a golfer, fine but does that not make it very difficult to strike the ball from your left side?

Exactly, there's no right or wrong way.

I'm right handed, but I hold a golf club or a cricket bat like a left handed player

Right sided player - right hand on top, makes for a very wristy left when in a tight scoring position. I think a strike from the right side looks sweet when the right hand is on top.

Hurling is the opposite grip to golf & cricket.

In my experience, incorrect.

Nonsense. If I was pucking the ball on my left side the grip on my hurley would be the same as my grip on a golf club; right had on top left below.

There is a right way. Keep your dominant hand on top at all times.

There is a wrong way. Keep switching.

A few great players did things the wrong way. Happens in every walk of life. There are always outliers.

Kids need to be taught the right way.

The easiest way to it with young kids is the right way, few coaches actually ask are boys/girls right/left handed. In hurling lefties have a huge advantage and also they tend to be good with both hands - so fill a team with lefties!

I'd be very interested to hear why lefties have a huge advantage...

Wasn't Ring a right hand on top man?

The reason lefties have an advantage is because they are a rarity. When you a being taught to hook and block it off putting to tackle a leftie as your being trained in blocking right handed player's. Also, show children the correct grip. Strong hand in top. Do not let them off , they will struggle as they get older. The few county men who are holding the girl cackhanded are the exception not the rule.

Honestly believe that it doesn't matter what hand is at the top of the hurl. Though I do agree that hands should not be switched, I.e catching the ball with whatever hand then placing that hand on top!! I myself am right handed but hold the hurley with my left on top. Has never stopped me from being competitive in any hurling team I've ever played in. And I would say the only reason my right hand side is not as strong as my left is because I don't spend enough time against a wall anymore unfortunately. Let the kids hold the hurl what ever way they are comfortable doing so. Practice practice practice, if they are good enough they will make it.

He was but so too are about 95% of hurlers so you'd definitely expect Ring to be a right hand on top hurler.

Right hand on top of the Hurley. That grip is 1 : the right way to hold it 2: gives a fraction of a second more time in hitting the ball. Some great hurlers hurled left over right but none of the top 1 or 2% strikers of the ball are anything but Right over left on the hurley

Yes BB good sdvice but this applies for right handed players only. So Dominant hand on top and Weaker hand below would be more accurate.

What if the player writes with his left hand? Padraic Maher and Lar in his prime were hardly ever hooked or blocked and I could name a load more. Brendan Cummins actually writes with his right hand and it done him no harm either!
