Strangest Refereeing Decision Ever??

Don't know, maybe you should watch it again without the ant-Dub shades on and see what the free was actually awarded for. It wasn't for two Dubs running into each other.

Ref made some good / bad calls for both.
a tough game to ref, red cards were good calls.

Dublin getting free for 2 players running into each other, Eoin O'Gara hitting Boyle on the face when he was on the ground and got nothing and the penalty that wasnt given.

Cillian O'Connor took out Cooper for a free.

well done Dublin, Hard Luck Mayo. Great Game

watching the game on TV yesterday I didn't think he gave the free for "2 dubs running in to each other" . It was another incident either before or after that collision so can people stop saying that. Just accept that Dublin won fair and square and that Mayo lost because they missed a few relatively easy chances for points and a rush of blood to the head by one of their most experienced players.

Replying To gigoer:  "I see a few of you are mentioning Martin Sludden again. As a matter of interest, I read somewhere in the aftermath of that fiasco that Sludden's report stated that he was about to award a penalty when Sheridan was dragged down but when the ball was in the net, he decided to simply award the goal instead - but that in itself is a contravention of the rules, it's either a goal or it isn't, it's either a penalty or it isn't, a penalty doesn't automatically result in a goal.

But that could have been just internet BS or propaganda I was reading, either way, it belongs way up there in the list of strange refereeing decisions."
That's interesting. Now, as far as I know, if a player is fouled and the ball falls over the line, I think the ref can award the goal. Now, if I'm right, I figure he definitely couldn't award the goal if the fouled player throws it (with intent of course) over the line, but I don't know if he could award it if the fouled player carried the ball over the line like what happened that day. Maybe he could if the foul resulted in man and ball crossing the line (e.g. if he got a push or a smack in the gob). I don't know. It's many years too late to be asking this now, but was there any commentary at the time from referees in the aftermath of that disaster?

Schools provincial quarter final. First time my then school had been let into a ''real'' prov competiton rather than a vocational schoools competition. We were up by two with a minute to go, and under the cosh as they looked for a goal to win it. I got a block in on the 13 and it rebounded around, and eventually fell to an opposition man who just pulled on it. Dove across and spread myself as wide as I could just out of hope more than anything else. Ball hit me on the hip/rear end about 5/6 yards from where the shot was taken. Ref gives a foot block and penalty. They scored, game up on the kickout, they win by a point. They go on and win the province. Remember my last game for the school as captain crystal clear 8 years later for all the wrong reasons. I'll admit I did Lee Keegan it and throw my gumshield across the path of the penalty taker.

For me looking at it without shades of any colour and seeing a few replays of it I still can't see the foul. Neither of the 2 players tackling the player in possession fouled him. The ref seemed to indicate by a hand gesture that it was because there were 2 players tackling. Unless the old " 3rd Man Tackle" rule was suddenly and temporarily resurrected I cannot understand the decision. Maybe someone on here with refereeing experience could shed some light. As in all football games now there were many decisions that could have gone either way but that one just seemed bizarre.

That's interesting. 8 years ago? You must have been one of a very few players wearing gum shields back then.

I think there was a hand-trip by a mayo player in front of the referee (possibly AOS) , very similar to Johnny Cooper's last year but more blatant . ref obviously seen it and gave free to Dublin but no card. Did anyone else see that. I must watch it again. something similar happened last year too with John Small on Andy Moran and no black card. so it's a lottery.

Unless you gave a yellow for him kicking a ball away, then you were just being a *****"
Dissent. He wouldn't leave the field

Saw that. Absolute black card alright. Aidan lucky refs were told to spare the black cards. Same issue would have arisen if penalty had been awarded to Keegan, since it was a deliberate pull down. Ref brought the foul back despite not signalling advantage.

Joe at his best in 2012: ball kicked into BB who gave his marker Cafferkey a push into the path of another Mayo defender. The two players heads clashed, so play was stopped, but it was restarted with a free in for the Dubs, which they scored. So last day was quite rational beside that decision.

When they want it to flow, they give it to Joe.
When they want it to stop, they give it to Gough.

My preference is for Gough. He's far more consistent.

Are you? I wore a gumshield 14 years ago, boxing and other field sports made me more aware of safety before the gaa entered the modern age.

My question was about the 8 years ago vs 8 years later comment.
Of course there were players wearing gum shields 8 years ago or even 14 years ago. Would you agree you were in a minority back then?
By the way was that 14 years ago or is it 14 years later now????

Trevor Giles was wearing them 20 years ago.

Being an 18 year old just after getting train track braces removed I wasn't and still don't take any chances when I comes to my teeth, cause the braces done minor miracles for me!

Strangest referee decision? Awarding a free to a team after 2 of their own players run into each other in an All Ireland Final, ah no, I was playing a club match years ago, I was in the backs when a fight broke out in the other half of the pitch, now all our 6 backs and goalie and the opposition 6 forwards stayed where we were, we weren't getting involved, our view was whatever clown started that can bloody well take the rap for it, we're not helping them, anyway one of our wing half backs signalled to our dugout for a bottle of water, it was handed to him and he handed it to his marker and other players around him, now while all this was happening the ref decided to come down to our half of the pitch and showed a straight red to our wing half back, he stood there in disbelief and asked what was that for, his marker also asked the ref what was he doing as well as the rest of the lads in that half of the field, the refs reply I don't know who started the fight but somebody from your team has to be sent off and you will do. Needless to say we never allowed him to ref another game involving our club
