The decision by British authorities to allow Cheltenham to go ahead will be regretted on both sides of Irish Sea over coming months. If league games are to be played it should be behind closed doors. As of now it is been left up to the individual to make the decision. Have been looking forward to Sundays game to give indication if Meath are improving or is it just another false dawn, however I have decided not to travel as I would be in the at risk category. This is not just about personal health, we need to think of those around us, their health, their work. I agree with John O'Mahony that the worst case scenario to finish off the league is to make final 2 rounds behind closed doors. They could scrap the football final and just play the hurling between the 2 best teams in each group. The virus is a cold weather phenomenon by all accounts and when it comes back next winter there could be a vaccine. Look at Singapore, warm weather no deaths, under control. I agree play the rest of the league behind closed doors, see how it looks then before the Championship, f you are depending on warm weather to curtail this virus you could be in for a long wait in this country.

No. Doesn't explain Brazil. They are currently growing at the exact same speed as us with cases roughly and their number is within a few digits, yet temperatures of 30+. It's 20c in Naples at the minute and it's certainly not slowing . I don't think we get much days over 21 a year to be honest so the weather won't exactly kill it.

I believe Singapore has banned incoming flights from certain affected countries though e.g. the Emirates. Something that hasn't really been done here in Europe yet. It's an unprecedented situation which deserves an unprecedented response. Something which unfortunately hasn't been forthcoming as of yet from European leaders. Why in the name God, would our amateur teams want to play in empty stadiums? Why would they put themselves at risk. I can't see the GAA paying sickness benefits. I think we should accept that it could be June /July before games can be played

I would say June/July is being pretty hopeful. There is a difference between what is happening in Ireland and what happened in Wuhan. In their case it had been allowed to get to the point where the virus was already widespread in the community and therefore there was really no way of controlling it bar a complete lockdown. You contrast that with Singapore and Hong Kong who have had schools/Unis closed, sports cancelled (a lot of that was due to the government owned pitches being shut) and widespread changes in how people interact and you can see how measures like these do have an impact even in densely populated areas. All of these measures are to limit social interaction so to prevent the passing on of the virus. However the world cannot just stop so people will have to interact but if they do the smaller the numbers when this happens the better as one there is less likelihood of the virus spreading if one of them are sick and two its easier to trace the people impacted. Now for a club or county team playing each other, yes there is the additional risk of picking it up from the other team but you are talking about a limited number of people in close contact and if subsequently one tests positive then the close contacts can be traced pretty quick. In a way people in the countryside are lucky as they do not have a public transport system so unless its a school or big workplace, close contacts can be limited. So playing club games/intercounty games behind closed doors, as long as everyone is heeding the preventative advice carries risk but I think its minimal. Thing is though its hard to predict, if one team plays another and someone subsequently is tested positive but teams have to go into self imposed lockdown for two weeks - so getting the games played will require a flexible schedule maker - luckily for the clubs as I said June/July is optimistic so they may now have until August to play their championships. zinny (Wexford) - Posts: 1804 - 12/03/2020 06:18:46 2273503 Link 0 |

Looking like schools in 6 counties will be closing from Monday....basketball ireland (albeit games are indoors) have just cancelled all games.....GAA should show leadership and err on side of caution....hurling leagues are finished bar the finals anyway so simple just make 5 leagues of 7 for next year as one off or something similar (scrap league finals/knocks outs in 2021 to make up the time).....scrap tier 2 for 2020 (which would be popular anyway) and just leave leagues as they stand unless someone is already definitely promoted/relegated......would rather stop now and sacrifice what is left of the league in the hope the championship can be saved.....
