The Neutral Referee

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now Eamonn fitzmaurice has come out of the blocks early in this one pre-empting the appointment of David Gough. Of course he is right but also note should be taken of referees getting appointed for games involving Dublin and those same referees having been regularly brought in to referee Dublin in house games and I'm sure with a substantial fee involved.
But fitzmaurice should also take note of the influence that Kerry has in the appointment of referees given the representation they have on the Referee Committee.

Both sides can be happy that it won't be Maurice Deegan.

It doesn't matter who they appoint really, if Dublin win, a good proportion of Kerry fans will blame the referee. They did in 2011,2013,2015 and 2016. Its just how it goes.

2016 a good example of that, they blamed Gough for missing a foul on Crowley that was only clear using freeze frames afterwards, and for giving a free correctly when Murphy handled the ball on the ground. That's what you're dealing with.

Don't get me wrong, if Kerry win, there'll be a proportion of Dublin fans crying about the ref too.

Idiot men children the lot of them.

Funnily enough they were fine with the ref in 2014!

It should be a ref from a neutral province living in their home province, as it was for decades. It is common sense.

There isn't a ref on the elite board from Ulster or Connaught who is good enough, unfortunately.

It's always the refs fault

Wrong! There is only one man that I think that deserves the game and has been great all year in any of the games he has done and that is Sean Hurson from Tyrone. I know he had Kerry v Mayo in the Super 8's and is more than capable!

The issue is the Kerry lies about McQuillan reffing Dub inhouse games and that Gough is involved in a Dublin club.

Niether being true when you dig down.

I think whatever happens, if it is a Dublin win, Kerry will blame something.

Have Dublin won a game fair and square againt them, from the ref to the weather to gouging......there is always something.

Disgraceful comments from from a former inter county manager. Gaugh is the best ref in country by a long distance, and he will be fair and impartial

Fitzmaurice is only firing out a warning shot, if Dublin win it will be seen by Kerry folk as he favoured the dubs, if Kerry win people will say he was worried about what Kerry folk would think and favoured them, it's a lose lose situation, a good ref won't give a s##t what people think, he will ref to the best of his ability, I do agree though that a ref from non competition provinces should be used, from 2010-2018 we have had 2010 Coldrick Meath, 11 Dublin Joe Cavan, 12 Deegan Laois, 13 Dublin Joe Cavan, 14 Eddie Kinsella Laois, 15 Coldrick Meath, 16 Conor Lane Cork and replay Deegan Laois, 17 Dublin Joe Cavan, 18 Lane Cork, in 2015 Dublin v Kerry had a non neutral provincial ref Coldrick from Meath and again the replay in 2016 Dublin v Mayo another non neutral provincial referee in Maurice Deegan from Laois, the GAA need to bring in more refs from all 4 provinces to balance any doubts and debates for the future

I dont like the attitude that a ref should let a game flow. It leads to not applying the rules and loss of control of games.
Suits people who dont want to be involved in rough and tumble themselves but enjoy seeing others get hurt.

All adds up to unfair treatment of players who should be 1st priority.

After all its not the ref that genuine supporters come to see

The question is, can a ref be objective or subjective? Both for sure. Clever refs can manipulate the rules, they do it quiet often. The GAA should appoint refs from non-competing province in big games to stop the excuses whether they are legit or not.

Is there anything to be said for another high profile match for Martin Sludden?

There is no such thing as a neutral referee, Liverpool v Chelsea for example.
