It's amusing after all my talk of the 4 Regions that someone thinks I am 4, let alone more that 1, user. I am Legend. Some man, for one man! ;)

The way it is if Dublin weren't so far ahead of everyone there are 4 or 5 teams with a decent chance of winning the All Ireland, not saying the Dubs can't be beat but it would take a massive performance with everything going right on the day to defeat them, I think this year Dublin are even better and now they have Connolly back in the squad too, I preferred the quarter finals the way they were but I would have liked the losing provincial finalist to have had home advantage in their quarter final, and I don't see what the mad rush is to pack everything into August. Top 10 Open Draw - 2 groups of 5 - 4 games per team - each top 3 to 10-team AI Tier 1 KO. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 03/08/2019 05:49:06 2219954 Link 0 |
Or how about a more radical solution. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1304 - 03/08/2019 10:20:56 2219994 Link 0 |
In my idea, after all play 4-game group phase - it's a 10-team KO in Tier 1 and 12-team KO in Tier 2. Teams in the Middle 12 end up in one or the other. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 03/08/2019 16:28:09 2220105 Link 0 |
Agreed. Or just make the All-Ireland series double-elimination if they are so desperate to have more games. At least all of the games will still mean something.

For that double elimination with improved fairness under existing two-stream structure - you could have the following - 1) Extend Front Door and curtail Back Door, both by one round. 2) Prov SF losing 8 draw a 'pairing' from current 1st Rd Qualifier - so, instead 8 groups of 3 in Rd 1. 3) Top 2 in each group join 4 Prov Final losers in 20-team KO Rd 2 (8 2nds and 2 worst group record 1sts are drawn away). 4) 10 Rd 2 winners join 2 Prov Champ Playoff Rd losers in 12-team KO Rd 3 (6 of 10 lowest NFL ranked Rd 2 winners are drawn away). 5) 6 Rd 3 winners join 2 unbeaten Prov Champs in KO QFs (4 Prov Champs or other highest NFL ranked Rd 3 winners host at own Prov neutral venues). 6) SFs at Prov neutral venues also - Croke Pk Final. Note - all 32 (excl NY) are guaranteed 3 games. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 03/08/2019 18:14:39 2220150 Link 0 |
There aren't enough games between the top teams in straight knockout. There were a few bad games in the first 2 rounds. There were also some very good games, they weren't meaningless. Ok the last round isn't great but to give teams more games the easiest way is to have some sort of group stage. The last 8 is a bad time for it though. All-Ireland series starts at QFs. The 8 teams are split into two brackets: Winners and Losers. The winners of both brackets contest the All-Ireland final. Keep it simple. Besides, I don't anyone is keen on a double-elimination format.

Better to lose the first game to enter the easier bracket then ? What about the Old C Ring Cup double elimination - 2 rds - 2 win teams to SFs - 2 loss teams are out - other 4 to QFs.

It's not an easier bracket.
