Sport has never been equal so I do not understand why the GAA is the only sport were they except us to have 32 competitive teams on the same level.

Connolly is a good journalist on the beat in Leitrim for years but he isn't really saying anything in this article.

Leitrim have been in at least ten Connacht finals and only won two of them, compare that to Longford or Fermanagh who've been in a fraction of that amount of finals, we should have a better return. Losing five finals in a row to Galway in the 1950s didn't help things and that was probably our greatest team.

The 1994 final was a wonderful memory but the team was much better than the scoreline against Dublin suggested. In fact we beat Dublin in the league not long after that. 1995 was the year that got away from Leitrim

Win 1 game in most seasons and you can get to a Connacht final. Play 3 in Leinster and you might still miss out, Don't compare.

That's what I meant. Much harder for Longford or Fermanagh to win their province, and we should have more titles to our name

Would Longford and Westmeath be open to joining the Connaught Championship?

Cavan, Longford and Westmeath are located in a good position geographically to join the Connaught Championship.

Laois and Offaly are located in a good position geographically to join the Munster Championship.

London can take Kilkenny's place in the Leinster Championship.

This leaves us with;

Ulster: Donegal, Derry, Armagh, Antrim, Down, Monaghan, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

Leinster: Louth, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Carlow, Kildare, Meath and London (Kilkenny).

Munster: Clare, Tipperary, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Laois and Offaly.

Connaught: Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Galway, Cavan, Longford and Westmeath.

Galway are established in the Leinster Hurling Championship. The above could be trialled for a three year cycle.

Why not put Dublin into the Munster championship.Kerry wouldn't be winning it every year then.

This is true....but championship was real when it was one off games where an of day may have been punished! Now it protects the top counties, unfortunately

east cavan is no where near connacht. It's closer to Leinster. In fact Cavan Junior team regularly play in Leinster.

I remember the game well. Incredible to think it is nearly 25 years ago.

I remember the minor game from that day too. Dublin lost to a very good Galway team who included a number of future All-Ireland winners. There was a future All-Ireland winner on the Dublin side too, Jason Sherlock. Ciaran Whelan was part of that panel too but I think he got dropped before/during the Leinster Championship.

I'm curious as to what people really want out of the championship. Are ye honestly lamenting the fact Leitrim don't regularly make All Ireland semi finals?

The normal purpose of any given sporting competition is to find a champion. In most sports that have a knockout/staged format this involves eliminating the weakest teams first, then the next weakest, then the next weakest, until you have stronger and stronger teams remaining and eventually the 2 "best" teams contest the final. In a sport with no seeding it's possible for a team to outperform their nominal level by getting a nice draw and going on a run, but that's rare. On top of this a double knockout format/group stage tends to produce a more accurate final standing and can sometimes cancel out unlucky draws.

No fair competition format will result in Leitrim regularly being in AI semi finals unless they have a particularly talented team. They've the smallest population in Ireland and are one of the least successful counties historically. Why would they regularly be in All Ireland semi final unless the competition was badly rigged to put them there?

I wouldn't pay a whole pile of attention to that fella now. I doubt he's ever been outside the county.

Wow...replying to myself...

I was talking to a friend about this last nite. He assures me that Ian Robertson, another future Dublin senior was also on the '94 minor team. As regards Whelan, I was wrong. He was dropped from the panel and then recalled and played in the Leinster Championship and in the minor semi against Galway.
