I think his name was Seamus Mulhern and he wore it for protection after a head injury as did Peter Cech the soccer goalie
In a primary school match many years ago, our midfielder dominated the game. Not only did he account for all our total of 3-5, but he scored the opposition's only goal when he caught the throw in at the start of the second half and soloed in the wrong direction before sending an unstoppable shot past our bemused goalkeeper.
I umpired an U-12 match where the full back was switched to midfield for the start of the second half. He went the wrong way with the ball but his long delivery into his own goalmouth was cleared. If the opposition had refrained from standing up and laughing at him, they might have taken more advantage of his error.

The goal was awarded and if I remember correctly it was in the first half so there was not too much of a hullabaloo. Offaly won by 1 point, 3-20 - 6-10, beat Wexford in Leinster Final and won their first All-Ireland by beating Galway. Laois had a great team in the early 1980s but Offaly got the breakthrough (fair play to them) and we had the heartbreak."
Spot on. It was Johnny Flaherty running around shouting goal I remember but Horan hitting the ball. I was 5 and at the match. Oh yes beat Tipp and Galway on their way to the Centenary hurling Final loss v Cork in 1984. U21 Leinster hurling champs 1983. Leinster Senior hurling finalists v Offaly 1985 after beating Wexford in the semi. Right though the 80s a very good side.
Indeed lost to KK with a late Denis Byrne goal in Carlow in 1995 and lost to KK by a few points in 1998, KK contested the All Ireland and lost to Offaly.
Here's what Padraig Horan said on the incident.. "I remember being absolutely disgusted with myself and then I heard Johnny Flaherty (Offaly corner forward) shouting and looking to claim a goal. The umpire had ducked and the shot went through the side netting so when he looked up it was in the back of the net so he gave the goal."
When Croke Park was a real community venue. Local women sometimes helped by their kids would sell fruit or chocolate walking through the stand from baskets /boxes.
A woman was at the front of the hogan stand gesturing frantically at a youngster climbing over the cusack stand wall with a box of her stock.
The lad started to run right across the pitch carrying a box(not easy) .A line of big stewards wearing big white coats went into position to head him off mid pitch and more encircled him to trap him. For several minutes he swerved and weaved his way around the more ambitious ones trying to tackle him (cynically at that) to great applause from the crowd who remained in their seats to witness the drama. There were louder cheers whenever a steward in an intensive dive landed on his face. It was brilliant entertainment.
He slipped through the cordon to pass the box through the fence to presumably his Mother who darted up the steps to sell her wares. All to rising applause from a packed croke park. He then made a clean getaway.
Big shame on the GAA that they did not allow tv cameras in at that time( except rarely). It would have been a classic

I remember hearing of the horan incident ok..fine margins indeed..I remember the Denis Byrne goal in 1995, 2-14 to 2-12, left it behind ye for sure that day... and the 1998 defeat..3-11 to 1-14...Wexford were the opposite of Laois in ways back in the early 1980's, Wexford would beat Kilkenny and then loose to Offaly...
