Newbridge Or The Curragh

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

with the news that newbridge is going to be a nightmare on saturday for traffic congestion between the Derby at the Curragh, the kildare-Tyrone game and a normal saturday shopping afternoon in kildare town, the GAA have refused the change the time of the game because the big paymasters in SKY have decided on the throw in time....the monster has come back to bite them big time.

A similar thing happened last year when Kildare beat us. Wouldn't even compare to the crowds going to the Plough for three consecutive days every September. Very manageable. A testament to the organisation skills of The GAA, The Curragh, Sky and whatever broadcasters cover the racing. We'll have very little sport to see in a few months so we should celebrate these events and the windfall they'll bring to Kildare.

Why is it always the GAA are the problem?
Move the races back a day.

Was the Kildare Mayo game last year not at 7pm to avoid the Derby?

Same conversation as last year. Proved not to be a problem then. Nothing to see here, move on.

The Derby day was scheduled well in advance, the match was scheduled on Monday. The first race is at 1:45 and not many will show up just for The Derby at 5:20. The people most put out are probably those that would like to go to both match and races.

It's only in recent years that the Derby has been moved to Saturday. Most of the traffic for the racing will be coming off the motorway south junction or by train so there shouldn't be any problems. For Tyrone fans take the junction north of that one.

GreenandRed covered this off. The Derby day is not one race. No one will be heading to the Curragh for the 5.20 race. People will be there way before people will be getting to Newbridge for the match.
The other point is that you do not go through Newbridge town (where the match is on ) to go to the Curragh.
There is no issue here.

There is no issue here you say but the Curragh CEO publicily says otherwise and given that the not so subtle issue that its the timing - 5pm vs 7pm - seems to have escaped you I fear we must leave it there.

Given that KildareKelly is from Kildare maybe you should leave it there .

This is a non issue. The CEO of the Curragh is just annoyed that the attendance on his showpiece day is now set to be reduced considerably. Many who would have gone to the Curragh won't now. That's the Curragh's problem. Their only chance to get remotely close to filling the place, which it needs to do as there hasn't been a cricket there since it reopened, has gone up in smoke. Tough. The arrogance of Curragh management continues to be breathtaking, and not just on this issue. They've driven people away over the years and will continue to do so. A background in racing would help I suppose.

Going to the game will not be a problem. Racing crowd will be in earlier than 3 or 4 when the heft pf the Tyrone traffic will be hitting Newbridge.

The issue is leaving. Getting out of the Curragh will not be pretty and travelling northbound on the M7 around 7 / 7.30 will be a log jam. Curragh traffic entering the M7 at J12 will be added to at J10 by match traffic.

The 7pm throw in would have meant that everything would be staggered a little better with the majority of the traffic leaving the Curragh gone by the time the match traffic will be leaving.

5pm throw in in a busy shopping town will be some craic!!

Advice....get in early and get some shopping / dinner into you before the game. After the game, watch the Armagh game and let the traffic off ahead of you.

In fairness, Newbridge is a great venue if you are there early or leaving late. Plenty to do to kill time.

Whitewater parking is usually free if you produce a match programme.

Would make more sense for them to tidy up the roadworks for the weekend and lift the 60kph speed limit on the M7.
