Should The Intermediate Or U25 Hurling Championship Be Brought Back

(Oldest Posts First)

I love to see the Intermediate hurling championship be brought back next year or in the near future. More often than not there was some great hurling games played and from a Limerick perspective it would give some our fringe senior players the likes of Colin Ryan, Barry Nash and Andrew la Touchè Cosgrave game time and others like Brian Ryan and Ronan Lynch who have being frozen out of the senior panel a platform to showcase their talents.

Not sure about Munster but the last few years only ourselves and Kilkenny seemed to play eachother. Then we didnt field a team last year and Kilkenny played Cork. Only remember Tipp winning it this decade apart from us, Kilkenny and Cork.

Galway won it in 2015

I suppose the big issue would be that they don't generate revenue for the GAA.

A few years ago Kerry looked at playing in the Munster Intermedite championship after the Christy Ring was over but it wouldn't be moved.

Something i've thought would be a good idea in thoery is this.

Baced on this year at the moment.

Leinster
Kilkenny, Wexford and Dublin intermediate teams. Along with Meath, Kildare, Wicklow and Offaly (Offaly baced on this year)

Munster
Cork, Clare, Tipp, Limerick and Waterford intermediate teams, along with Kerry.

Ulster
Antrim intermediate team with Down, Derry and Armagh.

Connacht
Galway intermediate team with Mayo, Roacommon and London

Galway could also be in Leinster.

It would give the likes of Kerry, Kildare more games longer into the summer.

For a lot of reasons it's neer going to happen, none more so than the fact it wont make any money for the GAA

In 2017 Munster ran an u25 development championship instead of the Intermediate championship but it only lasted one season.

I think there was one year when it was held about seven or eight years ago.

I think the intermediate championship has run its course. Not sure what purpose it serves, it's just another distraction from the club game. Under 25 championship would be the same, pointless.

Why Antrim's Intermediate team and Kerry's first team? With all due respect Antrim have been Ulster's leading light most of the time but at the moment they are mid Joe McDonagh Cup so why always have them on such a pedestal? We here in Meath were dumped out of our (Leinster) Championship to facilitate Antrim and Galway and the first chance that we got to play championship hurling against them we beat them. That was in the Christy Ring in 2016. They lost again the following year against Carlow and yet the GAA were prepared to promote them, as losers in 2017 while we were to be dumped down. For once our County Board stood their ground and did not let this happen. I am all for as competitive a championship as possible but special treatment I simply cannot suffer.

It was a farce really as Cork refused to agree to it so they played intermediate on their own and played an All Ireland final against Kilkenny.. The only game played that year. Then both competitions were scratched. I think itvis right. As another poster alluded to, there's enough intercounty competition taking from clubs as it is. This should be just left die.

Fair point it could affect the club's further, if it was to survive you probably have to play games before the seniors and move minor games back to mid-week but that won't happen. But I still feel an intermediate championship would be a good outlet for fringe senior panellists to play competitive hurling rather than a run in a few challenge games and guys looking to make a senior panel some outlet to show their worth.

Well Kerry aren't going to have the numbers for a second team and if they did wouldn't be able to compete so would defeat the purpose of the idea. Also Antrim are still ahead of the other Ulster teams so again would be pointless having thier first team in it.

Think you've your wires crossed there; Meath last played in Leinster (proper) in 2004, it was another 5 years before Antrim and Galway joined in 2009.

Have to agree lad. Too many competitions going on in the summer. Probably too much for the supporters to afford to support and therefore a non runner with Central Council.
