It was lose lose for both teams before the ball was thrown in. Win the game and you go to Croker to likely get trounced by Dublin. Lose and you're out in the qualifiers. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 26/05/2019 19:42:14 2187760 Link 1 |
You could argue that both teams are playing for the opportunity to be in the 2nd round qualifier draw. Such is the farcical nature of the Leinster championship, 2 wins in a row are needed(from preliminary round teams) to even be in the 2nd round.

Surely if they're going to play two 10 minute periods of extra time then why the hell can't they play a further two 5 minute periods until there is a winner? Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1893 - 26/05/2019 20:13:45 2187781 Link 0 |
Wasn't that a thing before ?

First score the winner after 10 minutes is up in the second period of extra time could be an option. I did think there's a need for penalties in football. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 26/05/2019 20:38:47 2187793 Link 3 |
Seems a bit mad and maybe a better solution could be found then a replay, but this is championship football. Teams going through the qualifiers and ultimately these two teams will be anyway, will be playing every week anyway. They've known this since last year, I'm sure they have prepared their fitness accordingly. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 26/05/2019 20:49:58 2187799 Link 3 |
Why not find a system of tie breakers like KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3480 - 26/05/2019 22:05:50 2187860 Link 0 |
Agreed that it should go to penalties. But disagree that either team ever had any chance of being competitive with Dublin. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 26/05/2019 23:49:32 2187903 Link 8 |
'Any chance either team had of making a semi competitive game is now gone out the window. ' KildareKelly (Kildare) - Posts: 593 - 27/05/2019 09:14:47 2187965 Link 0 |
This was played like an OByrne Cup game. The standard was shocking and it was clear that neither team really wanted to win. A complete farce. What is the point in going in against Dublin? Football is dead in the rest of Leinster. Daith (Kildare) - Posts: 1171 - 27/05/2019 09:23:14 2187971 Link 2 |
When Kerry were winning all around them, scoring 9 goals v Clare at one stage, no one said "whats the point " they just became hellbent on trying to stop them, and it eventually happened, just as it will to us. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8571 - 27/05/2019 11:49:48 2188060 Link 4 |
What are you smoking? Yesterdays game was a prime example that football inst dead in the rest of leinster, just that nobody is anywhere nearer to Dublin. If it wasn't Longford ye were playing im sure you wouldn't be as negative when the fact of the matter is Kildare should have lost. Tough game in tough conditions yet there was 40 scores scored!!! Longford missing 8 players that started and nearly bet ye last year putting up a performance like that tells a lot. Kildare have always had notions about themselves and i think yesterdays game along with the Wicklow game should dispel any of that craic! That being said we could easily get well beaten next time out but i think the overall standard in the province has improved, excluding Dublin v anyone of course. Only 2 matches so far that weren't competitive. Hopefully the replay and laois v Meath are because we know there the only 2 remaining fixtures that have a chance. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 27/05/2019 13:33:06 2188114 Link 4 |
I laugh at ye Kildare supporters, the most negative shower that's out there. It was a great game of football a joy to watch scores galore. Would ye rather watch the likes of fermanagh and donegal low scoring hand passing back and across the pitch. Sure dublin might give either of us a clipping but that's where ya want to be at giving them a rattle. They have to slip eventually. Last year we played with 14 men for 3/4 of the game and have to say we didn't put a bad showing in. Hopefully this year if we win the replay we can give it another good go rahoorahoo (Longford) - Posts: 56 - 31/05/2019 12:48:30 2189378 Link 2 |
Well said. They view Longford like you are some crap team they should be hammering. The reality is this Longford team are right up there with meath and Kildare and if it wasn't for Dublin they'd be leinster contenders. Getting an extra match before the inevitable Dublin trimming is a good thing. If I was either manager I'd do my best to win this but then rest the first 15 vs Dublin and save them for round 2 of the qualifiers. If Kildare win they'll be playing 3 weeks on the bounce and might have a qualifier a week later. If they don't rest their players vs Dublin that's their fault if they run out of gas a week later. You need to look at the bigger picture which is the super 8's and hope you get into a group without Dublin or kerry. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 31/05/2019 12:59:34 2189388 Link 5 |

Awful showing from Longford in the replay, what a turnaround from last week to not competing today. camlin90 (Longford) - Posts: 3 - 03/06/2019 08:24:12 2190072 Link 0 |
