SUPER EIGHT-Een ?

(Oldest Posts First)

For an exciting AI SFC -
1) Prior Year AI Tier 2 Finalists join Top 2 NFL divisions (incl prior NFL Div 3 Top 2) in the Super 18 - add Div 3 3rd and 4th, if needed to complete 18.
2) 'Super 18' has 6 groups of 3 - all 3 in each group from a different Prov - most likely possible - all play 2 group games.
3) Play Prov KO in parallel.
4) In honor of Eugene McGee - Provs start with 4x8 - the most NW 1 of Lein's NFL worst 3 join the 9th-ranked Uls NFL team in Conn QFs - other worst Lein 2 to Muns QFs.
5) Top 2 in each of 6 Super 18 groups join 4 Prov Champs in the AI SFC KO Rd of 16 - teams 'advancing twice' get a bye to the AI QFs.
6) Tier 2 - the 'Other 14' - form 4 groups of 3 and 1 'two-legged pair' (5 Intra-Prov groups, if possible) - all play 2 group games - 5 group winners and 3 best 2nds from 4x3 to Tier 2 QFs - 2 Finalists earn Super 18 berths in the following year.

There's no point to the Provincials if they have a different make up to now.

Do you play a National League?

You'll either have too few or too many games depending on whether you do or not.

Any system kind of has to have around a 16 game season in football. 13-14 maybe in hurling.

There's no point to the Provincials if they have a different make up to now - Hurling's Provincial change is unprecedented - why should football be exempt ?

Do you play a National League? - I add only 2 group games per team - hardly, excessive - and more in line with AI SHC work load - of course, to stay comparable - the NFL should be retained.

You'll either have too few or too many games depending on whether you do or not. Ridiculous, how so ?

Any system kind of has to have around a 16 game season in football. 13-14 maybe in hurling. Yes, absolutely agree (although I would go marginally lower, no big deal) - if both competitions are merged - this would be my 1st choice too - I offer the above based on 'hurling-style' separation.

Being grumpy is optional - for any of us, including me. You can decide for yourself.

I misread the group matches as 3 groups of 6. I thought you were adding 5 group games. Sorry.

I still don't agree that the Provincial make up should be changed.

Hurling is a different matter. There are bigger practical problems with the Provincial make up in hurling than football. Galway have no province, Ulster is significantly weaker than Leinster or Munster. Hurling really only hopes to retain the Munster championship. "Leinster" is a rest of Ireland championship. This format change worked well last season. It isn't without huge potential pitfalls in built. The Leinster championship adding Galway caused problems even before last season. Galway weren't part of Leinster at all levels. They didn't have any home fixtures. Galway pose a tricky problem for Leinster GAA too. The Leinster championship is the flagship competition of the Leinster council that is tasked with promoting Gaelic games in the traditional 12 counties of Leinster. By having Galway in their championship are they promoting them at the expense of developing the game in counties that are their responsibility. Offaly and Westmeath for instance could be playing Leinster championship but aren't. Does that hurt progress in those counties.

It's far from an ideal solution in hurling where there's more reason to do it. There isn't a compelling reason to do it in football at all other really than to create parity of numbers. It doesn't address non homogeneity of the quality between the Province which also affects fairness and is more in line with people's negative opinion of the provincial championship.

I'm not grumpy. It's just irritating when I see you post something that isn't close to being a realistic solution. You don't try to be realistic a lot of the time. Although it was my mistake that I didn't read that format above correctly and thought the number of games proposed was way off.
