CPA Strike

(Oldest Posts First)

Think it is interesting to see the CPA are talking about taking strike action in order to highlight the issues that surrounding fixtures.

Interested to hear peoples opinions on this.

Personally, I can see the logic behind it but not sure that it is practical at the same time. How will it occur? Not all players are members of the CPA so it is hard to see how something like this could be orchestrated. From a cynical perspective, you could see teams saying they wont field a team and then tog out and no other team show up and get the points on the board.

I think from a HQ perspective, there needs to be a decision made as to which is more important - Club or County. Obviously county is the cash cow for he organisation so will need to continue but this does not need to be at the determinant of the club. I do not understand how each of the county teams need to have their players for such extended periods of time to 'prepare' for games. What are they doing the rest of the time that they are together. I would nearly suggest that counties should not have their player more than 2 weeks before a match. This way it would allow for clubs matches to be played with county players more frequently.

Take the Kilkenny example, they are playing a round of championship when they've no Leicester match for 2 weekend. I couldn't see this happening in any other county and yet they are one of the best prepared.

Ill sign off my saying that just because things have gotten to such a level in terms of professionalism and commitment that it does not mean that it cannot revert somewhat without damaging the quality of what is being provided.

I don't think a strike would be ideal.

I think the GAA does need to address the structure of its season though.

A lot would be improved if the championships were more league based.

You'd want to have blocks of intercounty competition then have 3 weekends free. Club play the middle weekend the 2 weeks before the club game they are released to train with their club. They then have 2 weeks with the county to prep for that next block of fixtures.

In football county would be divisions of 12, 10 and 10.

Hurling divisions of 10, 10, 8 and 7.

I'd move Provincial and All Ireland club to the start of the year. Intercounty preseason can be played without those in club championship.

You'd have a calendar along these lines

April 7th AI Club football final
April 14th AI Club Hurling final
April 21st County Football 1
April 28th County Football 2, Hurling 1
5th May County Football 3, Hurling 2
12th May Football Break, Hurling 3
19th May Club Football, Hurling Break
26th May Football Break, Club Hurling
2nd June County Football 4, Hurling Break
9th June County Football 5, Hurling 4
16th June County Football 6, Hurling 5
23rd June Football Break, Hurling 6
30th June Club Football, Hurling Break
7th July Football Break, Club Hurling
14th July County Football 7, Hurling Break
21st July County Football 8, County Hurling 7
28th July County Football 9, County Hurling 8
4th August Football Break, County Hurling 9
11th August County Football 10, Hurling Break
18th August County Football 11, AI Hurling SF
25th August AI Football SF, Hurling Break
1st September AI Hurling Final
8th September AI Football Final

Club action in each county begins as soon as both county teams are eliminated from championship but can be played off in a good window from Mid September to end of October with no Provincial championships to be completed in time for.

Better competitions for county players.
4 summer weekends set a side for club action between the codes.

Better time of the year given to Provincial and All Ireland club championships.

May June and August bank holidays free for club players.

The long and short of it is, the inter county game makes the gaa money. They will keep incresing the amount of inter county games for TV as much as they can. There's no going back. The clubs are an after thought. It's not right as club players are probably 95% or more of the gaa players and there must be a healthy club game or the whole gaa suffers, but there it is.
