Meath V Donegal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Also to emphasis how new this Meath was and this was basically their first time in Croke Park. Of the first 15 players who started for Meath yesterday only 3 were on the Meath team who last played in Croke Park in 2016 v the Dubs. They were Donal keoghan Michael Newman and Cillian Sullivan. 12 of the 15 who started yesterday were not on Meath team who last played in Croke Park two and half years ago. The Meath players who were on the Meath team that last played in Croke Park the last time played we played there 2 and half years ago and who r no longer on the panel for different reasons r Paddy O Rourke, Declan Symth, Alan Douglas , Donnacha Toibin, Cian O Brien, Harry Rooney, Andrew Tormey , Eamon Wallace, Dalton McDonagh , Ronan Jones, Joey Wallace and Cathal Finn. All these Meath players played v Dublin when we last played in Croke Park in 2016.

To go 8 points up and 5 points up half time and leading the game all the way up to the near the 60th minute and then lose by 2 points v the Ulster champions and a top 6 yeam ( who yes have a young team also , but a young team who played division 1 football and reached super 8 and played Dubs in Croker last year and won Ulster last year and have players who beat kerry and Dublin in Croke Park and players who have won Sam in Croke Park, basically the best Ulster county of the decade and had one of the teams of the decade eg 2012 Champions , a county that have spent the whole decade at the top table of gaelic football ) is a good sign for Meath.
For basically so many of these Meath player it was their first outing in Croker and yesterdays game was basically a new Meath team which is only playing months together ( Remember 6 players who started yesterday for Meath did not play v Tyrone in last years championship) . Yesterdays maiden outing in Croke Park for this young Meath team was very good one if u look at it in reality.

Replying To mmc:  "I'm the same I argued this at the game even reading the rule it's hard to know what it is .
It was a bad call I'm not sure the umpires knew where Newman was or if he stepped in after the pass I made a call from the game and was told it wasn't clear on the tv either but I didn't see what was tv maybe someone that wasn't at the game can comment on it ."
It was not clear on the tv because the guys analysing obviously do not know the rules which is a bit strange. Anyone watching much football inside the county would know that you cannot be inside the small square before the ball is played-the call was correct. If the ball is kicked from 50m out it is very easy to get into square before the ball and be within the rules, however if a player is carrying the ball then it is difficult to be inside the square and within rules due to the time it takes the hand pass to reach the square. There has been abuse of this rule by some refs in the senior club championship. Good match and will bring players on- should have pushed up on Donegal in last 5 minutes instead sitting back in defence.

From open play the player must be outside the small square at the time the ball is played in. Newman was clearly inside so decision was correct

Overall a great league, a day put in Croke park already and the year is only getting started. Plus lots to look forward to next year in duv 1. There was a bit of a step up in quality on tv today. But nothing that can't be achieved I think we have the squad and management to be competitive in div 1 next year.

I think It was a square ball looking at on tv tonight. But the interesting thing about the square ball decision is, the umpire flagged a goal. The referee who was nearly in the middle of the pitch. Could not have seen the Newman was in the square. So how did they reach the conclusion he was ? Did they give the befit of doubt to Donegal ? Looks like it.

Replying To mmc:  "He did but he allowed Murphy in behind him in the second half he out muscled by him .
Murphy was in my opinion lucky to stay on the pitch he continuously fouled and stuck a hand in the face any chance he got .
Both throw up balls in the second half should have resulted in Meath frees he was all over the Meath player for the throw up and got away with it in front of the ref .
He got a free in against McGill in the second half that was clearly a free out .
Murphy is clearly a great player but was looked after by the Ref yesterday ."
Agree with alot of that but Michael Murphy will outmuscle most player. I felt Conor McGill played very well. It was a terrrific battle between them.

Replying To Reco:  "Correct me here is there not a rule square ball only from set play free kick sideline etc???"
I think before the last play of ball the scorer has to be out side the square and as the ball is arriving to the scorer it is then ok to be in the small square. Problem was Newman was in the small square as McMahon released the ball to him. i am nearly sure No square ball for set plays or sidelines .

i think the 4th official made the call, he has a monitor beside him.

My understanding was square ball from frees sidelines no square ball from open play that's the way I took it up anyway.but look the lad in the box pulling stuff back from a monitor when did this start. If you ask a linesman in a game can he interfere he says no. But if a player does anything to another player the flag goes up.jokeable stuff at the best of times.

I think Mc Gill did ok too. But we should not be allowing players out the field pick MM out with accurate passes. That are also most impossible to defend against. Having that said that MM clearly pushed Mc Gill for one of the marks it was so obvious it was actually funny. The ref missed it. but choose to query the square ball.

dont think its official or legal however how else did they make the decision ? referee was clearly talking to someone through his earpiece

Right I never noticed that, I didn't bothered looking at it really. because once I seen the ref going towards the goals I knew that was it.
