IX OF THE most-watched programmes on Irish television last year were sporting events, with the national rugby team delivering bumper viewing figures for RTÉ and Virgin Media throughout the course of a historic 2018.

Ireland's Grand Slam decider against England last March was the most-watched sporting event of the year, and the second most-watched TV programme of the year behind The Late Late Toy Show.

An average audience of 975,600 tuned in as Joe Schmidt's side beat England at Twickenham on Virgin Media, while the famous home win over the All Blacks in November attracted an Irish TV audience of 926,000, according to official figures released today.

Overall, Schmidt's side helped Irish rugby dominate the TAM figures, with the men's senior team appearing eight times in the top 50 most-watched TV programmes in 2018.

Commenting on the figures, IRFU communications director Stephen McNamara said: "We are delighted to see so many people tuning in to support Ireland on these great sporting occasions. Live sport is now almost unique in that it continues to deliver events that can still bring family and friends together to watch live."

The World Cup semi-final between England and Croatia ranks fourth in the overall list as 924,400 tuned into RTÉ's coverage from Russia, while the All-Ireland senior football [841,100] and hurling finals [854,400] also appear in the top 10.

I'd say it's pretty unremarkable.

Great year for Irish rugby got the interest up their.

World Cup in soccer and England's strong run means that's not a surprise.

1 shock I suppose is that the AI football was so close to the hurling in viewership given the hurling was much tougher to call and the football season was as a whole way less exciting than the hurling.

It is good to see the GAA being in the top 10 watched sporting events. It was a good year for the Rugby. The much hyped Irish rugby team that is.

It's flawed because thousands more would have watched the All Ireland's than the toy show....the figures don't take into account the thousands in bars across the world who watch the All Ireland's...does the same happen with the toy show or room to improve etc....no

If you look at the timing of the most watched programmes they are mostly on tv in the winter months on a Friday evening or Saturday evening when people and families in particular are 'trapped ' in their homes with nothing to do but watch tv. The 2 AI finals were played on a bright warm sunny afternoon and people had a choice to go out for fresh air or stay at home and watch a match. For the casual sports watcher outside the counties competing in the finals they are as likely to go to the beach as sit down and watch a match plus the fact the rugby team is suppose to represent all of us.

Floor to ceiling windows at the back extension, blew everyone's mind.

1 - It was the first episode of the season
2 - It was Daniel O'Donnell's house that was being "improved"
3 - It was just after Valentine's Day and most men were in the doghouse so had ceded the remote control to their partners

There might have been a case for that assertion 10 or 15 years ago, now Gaelic Football is a pale shadow of the once great game it was. As regards the greatest field, I think you'll find that is hurling.

Ah 10 or 15 years ago, when the country was going mad over 'puke football' ! In 10 or 15 years time we'll still hsve pundits and fans giving out about the state of football and wanting to go back to this period!!
