the reason is because for three out of the four games Ireland played understrength teams! the Italy and USA games saw Ireland field practically completely different teams to the game v New Zealand. They are glorified challenge games a chance to give lesser lights a run. Usually you get one big southern hemisphere team who decide to give Ireland, Wales and Scotland a match once every few years whilst most years they all go play the Motherland England at the spiritual homeland of Twickers!
I would hold off giving Schmidt the title this year I think the hockey coach deserves it, firstly getting to the finals was an achievement and then getting them to the final was amazing, ok in the knockout stages they may not have beaten the top teams but they did so in the group, also Ireland most revered success on the international stage Italia 90... we didn't actually win one game and Jack Charlton has practically gotten a saint hood out of that.

People dismiss them regardless of teams played.
They are not glorified friendlies. None of the players, coaches, rugby fans see them as such so why do GAA fans/soccer fans feel they can judge the games more than them?
Some of where they go depends on money and amount of games played per year.

Replying To galwayford:  "Jim Gavin is going for 5 in a row next year, and so are the Dubs Gaelic football team. Surely that is a great achievement for amateur players. Regarding having a go at RTE and other sports, well I have watched and heard GAA being attacked non stop over the last 20 years, especially Gaelic football. Have you read what has been said about our great game in some of the sports media?"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the same poster who said that your All Ireland loss to Limerick was a dark day for Galway GAA because we 'weren't a real GAA County'....

Never read any nonsense like that in your supposed GAA hating media.

Hopefully some GAA team will get an award. RTE itself is rugby rugby rugby. A good game but there should be a bit more balance to their sports coverage.

I agree with you and add when you look at the number of people who attend GAA matches, there is no other sport within the country to come close in numbers. That fact does not take away from the achievement of Ireland and Leinster in their rugby achievements.

Dublin footballers fantastic team but they won an Irish competition and they have won the same competition for the past three years so nothing really impressive there.
Irish women's hockey team came from no where to be the second best team in the WORLD.

Your sentence about the hockey team suggests they shouldnt get team of the year because they were well beaten in the world cup final. They should get it in spite of that considering what achievement it was to simply get to the final.
They were beaten in the final by the Netherlands who won their 8th world cup out of 12 tournaments held.
Irelands three previous times competing in the world cup were 1986, 1994 and 2002 where they finished 12th, 11th and 15th.
That alone shows why they should be team of the year. They were ranked 16th in the world before the tournament. Only one side competing at the world cup had a lower ranking than them before the tournament.
