All Ireland finalists end up with 2 all stars...Peter Harte man of the match in the semi final and leads fightback in final...Conor MC aliskey scores 2-38 during championship...Niall sudden scores 1-2 in semi final and has a phenomenal season...Mattie Donnelly outstanding performances through the championship...Paul mannion turns up in the Dublin club championship and wins an all star...pathetic! mayotyroneman (Tyrone) - Posts: 1821 - 01/11/2018 08:20:09 2148970 Link 1 |
All Stars are a complete joke at this stage. Tyrone should have had more than just the two. Ian Burke was Galways third best forward this year and gets one ahead of Walsh and Comer is close to disgraceful. Cavanagh getting one at full back make zero sense Cuckoosinging (Roscommon) - Posts: 992 - 01/11/2018 10:06:31 2148982 Link 1 |
Tyrone beaten in Ulster and beaten a similar way by the Dubs. No reason why they had a better year than a provincial champion such as Galway who only got 1. 2 ways a fair representation as Tyrone had no standouts. Ryan Mchugh's inclusion is the strange one PressureKick (UK) - Posts: 209 - 01/11/2018 10:07:10 2148983 Link 1 |
Some achievement by our young hero David Clifford, an All-Star in his debut season, hopefully it's just the first of many more!!!! TheHermit (Kerry) - Posts: 6354 - 01/11/2018 10:14:04 2148989 Link 2 |
No mention of picking a midfielder at full back just to fit him in somewhere? You've no problem with that? 890202 (Wexford) - Posts: 1278 - 01/11/2018 10:30:13 2148990 Link 2 |
I think we need to take our hat of to this Dublin team. The took 7 All stars and if one or two of the ones they got were borderline they could probably point to one or two they didn't get. It is easy to fire shots at them because they cruise through so many games hence don't look overly spectacular but I think that is a testament to their excellence. "Leads fightback in final"?? What fightback was this now? Mattie Donnelly was anonymous in the final, biggest game of the season and he failed to show up at all. Purely for that fact he can't possibly justify selection. Also how can anyone from a county beaten THREE TIMES in the championship claim any right to all star awards?!

I am a huge admirer of Cluxton's but since Dean Rock took over the free taking duties, Stephen's main contribution has been reduced to little more than taking kick outs. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 01/11/2018 11:09:55 2149005 Link 1 |
Cavanagh at full back is odd to say the least but I'd have no major issue with the rest of the team. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 01/11/2018 11:26:53 2149011 Link 5 |
The whole thing is a bit farcical at this stage. Undoubtedly lovely for the players who get them and for their clubs but every year you are left scratching your head more and more at some of the awards. When you think Cluxton has been overlooked every year since 2013 that says just about all there is to be said at this stage.

Ryan McHugh certainly threw me alright as did Cavanagh af full back, thats just acting the mick picking him there, the goalie spot was always going to be contentious and is proving so but I had a feeling Beggan would sneak it, I don't think Tyrone deserve any more than what they got being honest about it. I have seen better teams "picked" in a pub, or should I say "changed" in a pub. The story is that a particular team lost a semifinal that they were expected to win and the selectors were blamed for putting a strangely placed team on the field and they got a bit of flack afterwards. One of them simply responded listen "We picked the team on Thursday evening above in the pitch but it was changed later in the pub." Niall sludden was destroyed by murchan in both Dublin games and was completely anonymous, I'd say that was the main factor in him missing out. Plus manionn and Kilkenny were always getting two of the half forward line positions

Hard argue with the team really. I would have had Cluxton myself but was always going to be a close call. Of course delighted to see Ryan McHugh get in. I had Eoghan Ban down as Donegal's most probable but Ryan was excellent in every game he played. The goal against Fermanagh and the point against Dublin been particular highlights. Apart from Cluxton I agree in that Shane Walsh can feel unlucky. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2779 - 01/11/2018 11:51:59 2149024 Link 0 |
He won U21 star of the futre in 2013 when Galway won the Al Ireland. He was strangley the last of that crop of players to be called up to Senior football which included Healy, Daithi Burke, O'Curraoin, Flynn, Varleys, Walsh, Comer, Mulryan. He has won two club All Irelands with his club and imagine he may not have played for Galway this year if he had travelled to New York with his club after winning the Club All Ireland but for work commitments. Kevin Walsh dropped all his club mates that travelled.

while cavanagh arguably deserves his all star , the same sport writer's who all summer bemoan players dropping back and packing defense name him at full back. baffling ctowers (Dublin) - Posts: 99 - 01/11/2018 12:03:11 2149027 Link 0 |
4 in a row team only gets 7 while Kilkenny n Kerry 4 in a rows got 9. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 01/11/2018 12:13:06 2149028 Link 3 |
Hard see how McHugh deserved it over Murphy though for example? Murphy was equally as good in Ulster, phenomenal against Roscommon and better vs Tyrone where Ryan was quiet. Both were quiet vs Dublin although Ryan has a few good moments. Neither remotely deserves it over Shane Walsh however. Having Cavanagh in MF, Howard wing forward and Eoghan ban at CB would be acceptable but McHugh in there is a bit baffling
