Congrats To Tipp U 21Hurlers

(Oldest Posts First)

Well done to the Tipp U 21 Hurlers. They really came out of nowhere. They were hammered by Cork in Munster then beat a heavily favored Galway team and then came back and beat that same Cork squad. They lost a big lead in the Final and had the class to grab it back. Well done.

When looking back on the year they beat the reigning all Ireland champions, Leinster champions and then Munster champions.
They were a fabulous minor team who steam rolled Munster and won an all Ireland in 2016.
We should be able to get about 6 of those guys to step into Senior over the next 24 months. That's apart from the 2 guys already with Senior panel.
I think a lot of pressure was applied on Cork they are a great team and I think they would have won the all Ireland under the old format.
Tell you Cork will come close to lifting Liam McCarthy in the next year or two some of those lads on that Cork team will see many more big days.
Would like to see Declan Dalton get a run in the league think his a fabulous hurler some striker of a ball. I know he missed two frees early on in the game but he was having an outstanding year up until he got injured in the semi final.

I agree with everything you say, WildPundit, about both Tipp and Cork. Apart from those already established on Cork's senior team, the guy I'd be watching out for is young Turnbull. He almost saved Cork when he came in and was an outstanding minor last year. As regards Tipp, something that hasn't really been highlighted is the age profile of the team. I think eleven of the starting 15 on Sunday, plus four of the five subs introduced, were all minors in 2016 and so would be Under 20 this year. Unfortunately for them, there's no Under 21 next year. Another thought that strikes me is that Tipp were almost undone by two terrible referee decisions in the last two games. The sending off of Mark Kehoe against Galway was rightly overturned on appeal but there was a potentially much more serious blunder on Sunday when the referee allowed Mark Coleman, to stay on the field when he should have got a second yellow for hauling down Ger Browne. It seems to have been a case of mistaken identity but surely the umpire should have helped out the referee there. Coleman played extremely well for the remainder of the game and set up at least two points for Cork. The fact that Tipp managed to win in the end avoided a major controversy but apart from a few posters here on Hogan Stand the issue has scarcely been mentioned in the national media.

You always hope that you will get a number of players from successful U-21 or Minor teams, but as Galway know more than anyone, it's never that simple, and more young lads with All Ireland medals have disappeared into a big black hole in Galway over the years. In saying that I thought Cork were a shoe in for the All Ireland this year, but as always is the case in Cork, they got ahead of themselves, so much so that an article in the Examiner prior to their Semi final against Limerick, stated that Liam Mc Carthy would be residing by the Lee on a regular basis over the next number of years. However I do somewhat like that Cork cockiness and maybe if Galway had some of it, they might have a lot more than only five All Irelands. Yes I have no doubt that Cork will be a serious outfit over the next five to 10 years, but it looks like we are going into a period where you will have different winners of Liam Mc Carthy every year, but primarily from the top eight teams.

I think it was harder for Galway to manage their underage potential in the past but with the new minor and U20 structures Galway will win many more within 10 years.
Entering Leinster has bought them on and even though they lost 3 all Irelands with teams well capable of winning you can see an edge to their play and apart from AI final this year they were probably the most clinical team in the country the last 3 years in championship.
Even on the club scene Portumna not dominating anymore has also improved Galway hurling it's one of the most competitive club championship in the country now.
