It is sad to see what has happened Ulster hurling. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 24/08/2018 10:11:22 2136182 Link 1 |
Maybe they should allow representative teams in the L McC Cup also - Ulster, Rest of Ireland, J McD and C Ring All- Star teams. They could all continue to play in existing tiered competitions as well.

I know. Looking at that last result, Down beating Kilkenny away is just unthinkable now.

I think the following teams should be entered in the Liam McCarthy: Ulster Connaught (except Galway) Leinster (CR and JMD teams only) Would be great to see a path to Liam for outstanding players from weaker counties. liam500 (Wicklow) - Posts: 171 - 24/08/2018 12:14:11 2136228 Link 0 |
look at the games, the scoring was "normal" (no 0-32 to 2-25), more goals were scored, only occasionally point tallies went over the 20 mark, and at that it was rarely over 21/22). Northern teams were competitive in most games, and Down beating Kilkenny, I actually forgot about that result until I seen it again..not many will remember or think anything of it, but I am sure in Down, it was the springboard for some of the talent the county came through with later in 1990's...you are correct, the system is too much tiered now, and once the main results are out of the way, we do tune out of the Christy Ring's and Joe McDonagh results...sad really, God be with the days when results like above were only one of a few games being played so got decent commentary on radio on the day...its all about money now, promoting the game, while intended is not happening....I remember Offaly playing Kildare in Divison 2 in the early 1980's and only beating them by around 5 points, and Offaly were very strong at the time, they have made 1A and 1B now to keep the "cream" at the top...the counties coming up into it are lucky if they beat the other weak team in it, and then its defeat after defeat and back down to 2A where they came from..don't see much good in that... You won't be tuning out of the Joe McDonagh cup results next year

To be fair, if you're including Joe McDonagh teams in tier 2, they do get the opportunity to play at the top level at the quarter-final play off stage, its one of the better aspects of the new system (I wish the McDonagh group stage games got more coverage, its one of the more interesting components of the championship from a hurling development point of view). But I agree with you that on the whole, the championship is too tiered (5 is too much). The one upside of the McDonagh cup being reduced in number next year, is that the Ring cup will be a little stronger with that extra team. I think they should maybe look at amalgamating the Meaghar and Rackard cups, and rebalancing the Ring and Rackard accordingly (maybe increase the size of the Ring cup to accommodate more of what now would be the stronger Rackard teams). Then have both competitions played in tandem with the provincial championships at least (and fonals played around same time as provincial finals), so they're not just gotten out of the way before the summer starts. What I might be more worried about from an Ulster perspective, is that the Ulster minor and U21 hurling championships have been suspended for 3 years at least. I know Antrim are in the Leinster u21 and minor championships, and Down play in Leinster at minor, but I'm not sure where that leaves everyone else. I know we have the u21 b championship, is that better? Did Ulster teams play in a minor b championship? I remember reading the new hurling proposals when they came out, and I remarked here at the time about how Ulster hurling teams at underage were catered for (particularly how they could get promoted to play in Leinster), was fuzzy. I'm still none the wiser Marlon_JD (Tipperary) - Posts: 1823 - 24/08/2018 14:35:11 2136311 Link 0 |
you have me lost with all the strands above, to be totally honest, I had forgotten about Rackard and Meagher cups, and there is lies the problem, they are so far down the line no one (outside the counties involved) aren't interested, you wont be asked how Wicklow on against Warrickshire on Sunday night if you go for a pint!..Ulster has been "gutted" by putting them into Leinster, some people even don't know Antrim are in Leinster!..I don't know...I yearn for the old days of All Ireland finishing 1st Sunday of September and NHL firing off 2/3rd Sunday in October, with no "staged" game of repeat of the All Ireland Final which is very common now to try and garner interest, God be with the days if Cork or Kilkenny won the All Ireland, they went to Wexford park, Gaelic Grounds, or Ennis with maybe 13/14 of their All Ireland team available and were beaten by a point or 2 and it was talk of the week that they were beaten...its so commercial now I find it very unattractive to follow nearly..you know the team being put out in the League will be nearly totally 15 different fellahs for the next round etc...if you win this week by 10 points you might be beaten by 15 next week, its totally on its head format and results wise...

Some incredible results in that group. Kilkenny losing to both Antrim and Down, yet they'd go on to win the All-Ireland that year. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2018 - 25/08/2018 07:21:24 2136461 Link 0 |
