Will Joe Canning Catch King Henry? (Championship Scoring)

Wouldn't take much notice of the average. Shefflin played in 13 All Ireland Finals including a replay where the pressure would be a lot higher than playing through the qualifiers against weaker opposition.

In 2012 he scored 3-56 in 6 games (average 10.83). In 2013/2014 combined he scored only 4 points in 9 games coming off the bench. He also went off early in 2 finals with cruciate injuries. This would have diluted his average which was up to then 9.11 (including the injuries) and ahead of Joe's current average. Averages tend to drop as player get older.

The scoring total means nothing really other than to the player who has it. Shane Dooley is in the top 10 and we have been terrible the last 10 years.

Joe had a spell where he wasn't taking frees so this would have affected his average too.
I agree in general about it's meaning, as it's going to be completely dominated by freetakers.
I'd love to see the same table based only on scores from play, but could never find the stats anywhere. Likewise for football.

Replying To WanPintWin:  "What's also incredible is Nicky Rackard's goalscoring record. 59 in 36 games is ridiculous.
Tony Doran's 40 in 40 is also some achievement.
While the game has changed massively over time to one where goals are harder to come by, Rackard's goal record stands out even in comparison to the other greats of his own era like Christy Ring."
I agree with you. What a savage goal scorer Rackard must have been. Tony Doran too. I'm surprised Joe McKenna of Limerick isn't on the list. When I was growing up I remember him always scoring goals.

You make some good points but everyone can't play for Kilkenny. The list is full of Kilkenny, Tipp, and Cork names and rightfully so as they are the best of the best but in Dooleys case he didn't have the surrounding cast like Shefflin did so had to carry a lot more of the load. Same with Canning in some of his earlier years with the Seniors. Cannings average will drop I'm sure as he gets older but it's still an awesome achievement to be the only Galway guy on the whole list.

A few years back I saw a table of top scorers from play and Joe was well up there, in fact I think only John Mullane had a better scoring average.

It's due to his consistency. He's always up there in the scoring since he joined the Senior team.

I'm surprised Ger Farragher or Eugene Cloonan are not on the list. Maybe not enough matches.

Galway weren't in Leinster when them guys played. Some years Galway were bounced out after only one match while the Munster and Leinster teams had a few matches each.

Well then if that's the case then Galway should get more people on the list in years to come under the current format.
