Record Hurling Semi Final Attendance

(Oldest Posts First)

Last year Cork and Waterford set a new record attendance for an all Ireland hurling semi final of 72000 . Will this be beaten Sunday by Cork and Limerick .. it's looking like it .

I was there in '85 in the lashing of rain when only 9 000 turned up in Croker.

Match turned out to be a classic (Cork v Galway), the day that famous Galway half back line announced themselves.

O'Hehir's last match as a commentator before the stroke. Announced there were 9 000 mad people at the match at the start (never seen such rain) then later announced that the ones who stayed away were mad.

Best hurling match in such conditions

I'd expect something similar but it may just go above that figure. Phenomanal attendances this year in the Munster cship considering the volume of games. At a rough guess I'd say the average was somewhere around 22k to 25k. Limerick-Clare was also sold out and they wouldve filled it twice over.
In terms of support Cork & Limerick have brought a lot of colour and noise to the cship this year!
In most games you'd always have a preference for one team over another but this one I'm genuinely looking forward to as a neutral.
The two teams I tipped not to get out of Munster - Calre and Limerick have both a right chance of reaching the final.

The average attendance in the 5 rounds of the Munster Championship was 15k. If you factor in the Munster final it rises to 23k. If you were to ignore the two Waterford 'home' games (10k and 15k), the averages would have been higher.

Wouldn't have everything to do with population.

Was Cody too busy hurling to teach you maths? By your calculations. 10 cship games has a total of 150k supporters while 11 had 253k supporters.
Over 100k people at a munster final is some attendance!
There was over 20k average at the group games and rose to over 22k after the final - rough calculations!
Anything for a dog at the munster cship!

Yes, I got it wrong.

The total attendance for the ten group games was 203.445. giving an average of 20k

Include the Munster final (45,364) and the average is 23k.

I was there too witnof. My Late father who was a very proud Galway man was there with as was a college friend of mine from Cork . We sat in the covered area of the bottom deck of the old Cusack Stand . There was no bother finding a seat that day. What a game it was . My dear father was thrilled . Great memories and precious days witnof . Thanks for bringing them back .
