New Offaly Football Manager

(Oldest Posts First)

as most other counties seem to feel their county is so important, I decided to start this post..with Paul Rousse now not being able to remain on as football Manager, where do Offaly go now, inside or outside the county? The talent may not be there in the quantity required but there are some fine footballers there, whoever comes in has to be respected, and players opting out for the wrong reason should be left there..out...if you want to play for your county you do, and the Manager is the boss, like him or loath him as they say...any names or suggestions..or will it be bargain basement again (no disrespect to Stephen Wallace who brought a good degree of success on his CV to the job be it at a lower level, no one inside Offaly had the sucess what Wallace had on his CVto be fair to the man) Lets hope the county board pull out all the stops this time, we need to get back up to Division 2 and steady the ship there for a few years even...this Division 3 and 4 lark is soul destroying to a once proud football county (in relatively recent times compared to other teams in Div 3 & 4 who had success back many years ago...anyway..who do Offaly need to bring the on and up a division?

This comes up almost every year in Offaly. Since Pat Flanagan departed in 2017, we had 2 managers, and now a third manager is required. It does not say much for security of tenure. I certainly can't see a high profile candidate taking the job, so it will be an unknown outsider, or an internal appointment.
The past championship made news for all the wrong reasons.

I agree that when a player is selected for Offaly they should give their full commitment to that jersey, and respect the manager. There are a lot of supporters who pay good money at club and county games, and they are entitled to players putting their best performance for the county.
Having said that the demands on amateur intercounty players are unreasonable, and they are entitled to a life outside training. This is a national problem, not just confined to Offaly.

For the past two seasons Offaly footballers were depending on the last game to determine whether they stayed in Div. 3, or dropped to Div 4. That should not happen in 2019.
It should be interesting to see who is chosen as Offaly manager, ideally while the football championship is in
progress, to run an eye over the club players.

I hear you Longridge..and we kind of go into a eurphoria then when we avoid the drop (if we are lucky enough), that carry on is ok now and again but as you say not every year..Rousse liked the job and talked everything we wanted to hear, yet he wasnt in a position to take the job full time which has to be accepted..looking at how the championship panned out after our elimination by Clare (who were unlucky to loose to Armagh, who in turn were beaten by Roscommon who were hammered by Tyrone, whom tomorrow evening we will know how good Tyrone are!) so we are a nice bit down the ladder. It would be great if we could attract an even middling "big" name but as you say thats not going to happen, so more than likely it will be some fellah led Timahoe to a Intermediate championship 2 years ago or something...really if a good former player could take it it would be great..Ime just going to say maybe a member of the 1997/98 team or Peter Brady or Vinny Claffey maybe...other than the TImahoe manager mentioned above my bet is it will be a Tullamore former player like Rousse who will "get" the job....

Isnt Offaly very poorly represented on here, God knows in recent years we have lots to talk about for the wrong reasons...some counties have loads of commenters and post creators...

Our poor representation on here could be down to us having our own discussion forum. Although uibh fhaili.com is not what it used to be and hardly anyone posts there now.

Peter Brady seems to be a popular choice and Paschal Kelleghan maybe too.

looked at that other website there..don't know..logging onto 2 websites to keep up to date with all GAA is a bit of a hassle and then having to register on that etc..think I will stay here....

Not Pascal Kellaghan, way too defensive. I see from today's Independent he is the running for the Westmeath job. Maybe Stephen Darby as a manager, he would be well respected, and has a good footballing pedigree. We will not get a high profile manager, so it will be a local or a candidate building up their profile.

Watching the football served up last Sunday by Rhode and Ferbane , the new manager will have his work cut out. Ferbane and Rhode engaged in the usual endless hand passing, backward, sideways, any way but forward. Ferbane were perhaps more guilty, and Rhode just picked them off, until a late Ferbane free got them a draw. There was a pitifully small crowd there, no more than 100, at a match between the champions and their possible successors.
One time this would have been a full blooded championship game, played in front of a passionate crowd.
Not last Sunday.

First I must confess while I follow Offaly Seniors I rarely go to club football matches...not a great picture painted of Ferbane and Rhode..and a small crowd as well!!!...hard to know...Darby I suppose would be good but not a "modern" manager and I fear he would take the job, do a few year (if he stayed) and we would be no further on...getting out of Div 3 has to be the benchmark for 1st season...no messing around "just" avoiding relegation etc...I spoke to a man who seen Cian Johnson playing and he said he was a great footballer, he looked at me as if I fell off the moon when I asked him would he be another "Diarmuid Clifford"...ah jaysus no he said...what is our benchmark of "great young talent"...really hope Johnson and a few more come through....along with a good manager....
