Mayo Ladies Walk Out

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

"We, the Mayo senior ladies panel, believe the time is now right to make a statement regarding events in June and July 2018. On 6 July, eight players were withdrawn by their club without consultation or discussion with their Mayo team colleagues.

"Understandably, we as players were left shocked and saddened by this decision which was taken 10 days before our championship match with Cavan. Another four players, one selector and one backroom staff left following a failed coup which took place at a players meeting two days later.

"To date, we have not been given any reasoning or clarity as to why this course of action was taken. We feel deeply let down and hurt by the actions of those who left our panel.
"We believe that no player welfare issues exist or have ever existed under the current management and categorically disagree with the statement issued in July by the individuals that departed the Mayo senior ladies panel regarding the welfare issues raised.

"We were surprised and disappointed to hear of these issues and if we had witnessed any welfare issues, we would not have hesitated to highlight them to the management.

"It is fair to say that there was considerable upheaval in advance of the Cavan game. This was the biggest game of the year for us and our preparation was distracted.

"We take offence to some of the comments that have been made by certain players over the last few weeks in the media.
"We fully support our management team and as a team believe that all of their decisions and selections were made fairly after careful consideration. We had a fantastic league campaign culminating in a league final appearance in Parnell Park and while the last few months were difficult and disappointing; many new players were given an opportunity to perform at county level.

"Our manager Peter Leahy has shown integrity and honour under tremendous pressure and he has always treated us as elite athletes, has supported and stood strong for us allowing us to play football without fear or intimidation.

"The management set up has been top class with no stone left unturned to make sure we can avail of top level coaching and facilities. The management ethos is focused on teamwork and also on how we as individuals can perform to the highest standard.

"All players are treated with honesty and respect in an environment where generosity and passion for the county are to the fore.
"Ultimately, we want to play football and honour our county jersey and we trust and support our manager, Peter Leahy, and his management team to take the county forward. We always have and always will welcome any player to the panel to help us achieve our goals.

"Mayo Ladies senior football panel would like to thank our management, county board, families, friends, supporters, general public and ultimately our clubs for supporting and trusting us during this difficult time as we strive to bring honour to our county.

"Go raibh míle maith agaibh."

The above is the statement made by the majority of the Mayo Ladies' Senior Football team. There has been very little mention of this statement in the media and discussions around the fiasco.

Why are the majority of the panel being ignored by the media and some posters on here? Why is the opinion of the majority of the players less valid than the opinion of the small minority?

Replying To martinjoe:  "Huge contrast in the way the media and public are reacting to the aggrieved players in Mayo, and the way they dealt with a similar case involving a professional player in another code in recent weeks. That case according to media reports centred around a coach berating a player for sitting out a training session. Front page headlines in some national papers called for the coach to step down. The only difference I can see is that the mayo case involves a male manager and female players."
The other difference was we were all told what the player's issue was. He didn't call a press conference and say damn all. The Mayo girls who walked away left their manager's reputation hanging in mid air and their fellow players don't support them. They need to explain their stance or stop looking for support for an issue they are keeping invisible.

You would have to wonder sometimes as to the media's agenda with these kind of cases.
They get great mileage out of these kinds of stories and often seem to like fanning the flames.
I'll tell you something though, those girls who left should come out now and stop this oul sh1te hawking and say something other than casting aspersions and putting nothing statements out that clear up feck all .

"Why are the majority of the panel being ignored by the media and some posters on here? Why is the opinion of the majority of the players less valid than the opinion of the small minority?" because it is nothing to do with them at all? they are playing, happy in their lot, happy with their manager, happy with the setup, happy that Carnacon's player suspensions gives these players now a chance of winning club championship so how can they be a party to a dispute when they are not in dispute? Do the media ask people not on strike about the reasons for a strike? In every conflict there are winners and losers I cannot think of one reason for asking for their opinions. They were not a party to the one and one conversations to the meetings etc they are four square behind the manager so their views are similar to management and are well covered. The only question I would have is why in the above statement do these speak in a fog ""We take offence to some of the comments that have been made by certain players over the last few weeks in the media." What offence? spell it out girls? don't speak with forked tongues, don't hide behind words BTW this applies to every party to this dispute.

First i have seen of that very comprehensive should be finished at that."
The only question I would have is why in the above statement do these speak in a fog ""We take offence to some of the comments that have been made by certain players over the last few weeks in the media." What offence? spell it out girls? don't speak with forked tongues, don't hide behind words BTW this applies to every party to this dispute."]It's absolutely nonsensical to say they aren't a part of the dispute. They are full members of the Mayo senior football ladies panel, just as much as the girls who walked out were. You can't just dismiss their thoughts just because they agree with management, they AREN'T management so deserve to be treated as a separate entity. The big question you didn't ask is why did the girls who stayed stay and not walk away too? Normally in these cases you see squads united against a manager or county board but we have some who left and some who didn't. Now we have to assume the girls who stayed saw nothing out of the ordinary in the way they were being managed, so why won't the girls who left say exactly why they left? Vague phrases and allegations are not explanations. Time for them to be big girls and state their case properly or else leave Leahy and his management team their names intact.

That is the part of the players who have stayed statement I want to talk about. Firstly I personally think this is a power struggle simple as that. No issues from the start of the year when manager and captain had words when captain tried to flex her muscles and say we run the team around here and manager said hey know not anymore. Next incident was 6 months later after having a very successful league campaign and making the league final. Guess what then some big name returns and trouble starts. OK talking about the above statement maybe I am wrong but they say free to play without fear or intimidation. Perhaps and I might be wrong but perhaps there was intimidation and bullying going on by returning older players and the manager stopped it. Either way girls are very happy and there parents are very happy with this manager obviously. This is a closed case and unless the exiles either say sorry for the use of the words they used or they come up with real facts that back them up well then nobody should be talking about this anymore. The players that play are the only ones who count the players who left are not county players anymore full stop and have no say in the mayo set up.
