TJ Reid Or Joe Canning?

Replying To gatha:  "Watching the match Sunday I realized Big Joe was absent for large parts of the game. Started thinking TJ always has some influence on a match. Looking back over their careers I would have to say that if I had to pick one over the other I would take TJ. TJ is the best free taker in Ireland he is always dangerous for a goal. He brings other players along and is rarely absent for any extended period of time during a match. Will go down as one of the best Kilkenny ever had."
Better medal collection TJ. Higher scoring rate Canning. Better player - who knows! Very difficult to say who has more of an influence these days.
Dont have the luxury of seeing possessions, assits or key passes unfortunately.

Frees and line balls are huge and there arent many around better at either than JC or TJ but I had a look at their scores from play.

TJ
2018 - 5 point from 5 games
2017 - 1-3 from 3 games
2016 - 5 from 5

JC
2018
8 from 4
2017 - 10 from 5
2016 - 1-5 from 5

Average from play over last 3 years
TJ - 1.23 (16 points in 13 games or 1-13 in 13 games)
JC - 1.85 (26 points in 14 games, 1-23 in 14 games)

For what its worth I also totted up the scores from play for Noel McGrath who plays a similar type play making role for Tipp
NMc
2018 1-8 from 4
2017 - 11 from 5
2016 - 10 from 5
32 in 14 games or 2.28 per game. Noel wouldnt be considered a huge scorer for Tipp but has been an unsung hero since his last all star. I'm not saying he's better than either by any stretch but it's interesting all the same.

As hugely important as frees are in hurling I do think the massive scores these lads are racking up from frees clouds peoples judgements. From an inside forward persepective I'd imagine there's no one within 20 points of John McGrath with scores from play the last few years for example.

Replying To PressureKick:  "Canning was the better player in his early 20s but has slowed down a bit. TJ has been better the last 3 years or so. Who was better at their best, Canning (2010 or so), or TJ (now)? Probably Canning"
Taking out this years league I'd say TJ hasnt been at the top of his game the past 3 seasons (certainly in the cship). The 2/3 years previous he hurled as well as anyone ever has though and was almost unmarkable.

That's mad that I done that comparison yesterday and didnt even realise it had been done years ago!
I might go a step further and compare scores from play since 2010 when I get around to it.
Both started in the full forward line and now playmost of their hurling in the half forward line.
I'm defintely not going to say Noel is a better player but stats (while never give the full picture) interest me.

Love Tj, but I have always admired Joe, both are crucial for their respective counties and I guess you might be splitting hairs, but its Joe for me.

Replying To WanPintWin:  "He has 6 more actually, but that's a nonsense argument. If Canning was born in KK, he'd have just as many.
There are thousands of players with more All Ireland medals than Ken McGrath, yet he's a better hurler than the vast majority of them."
Wexford Women running across the border to KK when Contractions coming to have their Kids born in KK.

Love them both. Could watch them all day. Off the pitch I believe that they are two really nice people. We are privileged to have them play hurling and have the pleasure of watching them.

They'd be better running over the border long before that, if they want to get more 'pure hurling' into the Wexford gene pool. ;)
