Replying To The_DOC:  "Any Mayo team featuring Ciaran Mc Donald is better than any form of the Mayo team over the last 10 years."
Eh no. The Mayo team of the last 5 years is far better than any team which Ciaran McDonald played on. We're talking about a 'team', not an individual. Many of the teams McDonald played with got absolutely hammered in Croker.
This current Mayo team have been ultra-competitive in all big matches they've played, including a number against one of the greatest teams ever.

Replying To kildare73:  "I would second everything you say about Mayo. A fine team who through a combination of luck and circumstance didn't get over the line. A fantastic bunch of supporters too. Nobody would have ever begrudged them the big prize. And thanks for your very vocal support this week. Us lads don't always see eye to eye on everything(or anything lol) but the likes of yourself, Richie and others were front and centre this week. Resume hostilities in February??;) Hope the wife and kids are well."
Lol. Yes hostilities will be resumed come February. : ). Until then, best wishes to Kildare.

Would agree with that. Look at Meath. Dare I bring it back to ourselves, but stephen bray would have been a starter on any of the all ire winning Meath teams. But he hadn't got the back up that they had. McDonald was a fantastic player, without doubt, his performance in 06 was one of the best I have ever seen v dubs. But the quality of the team around him was not up to scratch, whereas now the team is much better than the ones he played on.

I'd say Mayo will just love all this " sure aren't they great all the same " stuff.

Replying To Spoddgy:  "Well doc you are either having a good troll or not the best judge of talent. If we had Ciaran mac and even a Connor Mortimer type player in the squad now we would have got over the line. When we had these lads in our team and got to all Ireland finals lost the battles in defence and midfield so we couldn't supply them with the service the needed. The team we have had the last 8 years is better than anything we have had since the 1950s with the team in the late 1990s the next best after."
Mortimer was overrated. He was a great free taker, but ye have one of those now. McDonald was a play maker, something ye lack at the moment.

Ciaran McDonald was one of the best Gaelic footballer I've ever seen, I don't think there's any individual on the Mayo team since that was in his league.

McLoughlin could fill that role. Not as skilful a player as McDonald, can't kick long range scores like him either but a very smart player who can still find the posts. It goes unnoticed how often he doesn't rush into doing something stupid with the ball, he'll slow down the play if there's nothing on and wait to play the right ball. When asked he was an effective sweeper but when we've some decent backs why weaken your forwards when a defender could be just as effective as sweeper?

Talent-wise yes. But he had plenty of poor games too. In terms of effectiveness as a footballer over a career, I'd have Keegan ahead of him.

McDonald is so overrated it's shocking he had moments of brilliance no doubt but he was so inconsistent, he was laughed at on the Sunday game many a time and he seems to have become a much better player since he retired.

Replying To The_DOC:  "To be fair, I'd begrudge them an All Ireland so I wouldn't say nobody...maybe the majority? But then the majority of people live in Dublin - would they swap one of their wins for the people of Mayo? OK so not, me and probably not the majority of people either.

Some. Some people would not begrudge mayo an All Ireland."
Stick myself and Joe Brolly (after his recent article) down on the list of people that would begrudge Mayo an AI. Cheers, Doc.
