Sligo player asked to play two game in one day

(Oldest Posts First)

The footballer's have had a dismal run which culminated with a heavy defeat to Galway in the Connacht Championship. Our hurlers operate in the lower tiers of hurling's competition. They are in the Lory Meagher Cup final in Croke park on June 22nd which is the same day as the footballers play their round 2 qualifier game against Armagh at home. Problem is we have one player who plays on both teams. Croke park are obviously not interested in our situation or they would have made some adjustment to the fixture. Will the GPA get involved? Remember they were formed to protect the interests of players welfare with equality for all players not just the elite. Interesting days ahead

You would like to think the GPA will loby on his behalf. I can't imagine that this would happen to someone like Keith Higgins. Can the Lory Meagher not be put back by a week?

While it is unfortunate from a fan perspective, Surely it's a no brainer from the players point of view, I would hope the football team allow him miss the game and go play in Croke park with a chance to win an All Ireland medal and then let him celebrate with his team afterwards. The question is, will the Sligo people give the hurlers as much support as they will to the footballers.

Think Derry had their Christy Ring game against Kildare switched from the Saturday to the Sunday to accommodate their dual players at the weekend. Surely they can do something similar, maybe play the Sligo - Armagh game on the Sunday instead.

This does happen Keith Higgins every year and he has to choose one or the other. He missed the entire football league this year as he was committed to the hurlers for the early part of the year. However, as this is a once off, the GAA, with the GPA input if required, should facilitate this situation

Offaly v Clare is on the Sunday. Why can't they move the Armagh game to Sunday? If there was some GAA mad Sligo person with a helicopter they could fly him to Sligo after the hurling. Hurling starts at midday and football starts at 6 PM. Bit of a longshot that one!

I just think he has to choose one or the other.

Fixtures are a mess, the GAA don't legislate for dual intercounty players anymore.

They have to draw the line somewhere, the GAA calendar is a nightmare, they just can't suit all the people all the time, it's actually not fair on everyone else.
