Jody gunning was ref and jj McCormack from walterstown was capt for Meath. I must have got my venues mixed up. I would have put 100 that it was in Mullingar. Ahh age is a terrible thing plays tricks on the mind.

I should have said longford beat Meath in 1965 also. As well as beating Meath and Dublin in 1968 and Galway three in a row in 1966. I was just concentrating on 1968 and 1982 as both were significant results in different ways for both counties. I should have emphasised that these were not the longfords only wins. As Ollie has said above Meath have won 10 times and longford 6 times. That longford team of 1968 outside the Dublin Meath and Offaly All Ireland winning teams was one of the best to come out of the province in leinster in the 80 years. The longford 1968 team, Kildare 1998 to 2000 team and louth late 40s were the best to come out of the province not to win Sam. Of course the best team to come out of leinster outside the big three in the last 80 years was Ollies county one of the greatest teams ever to come out of leinster , the 1957 Louth All Ireland winning team. The 40s and 50s and late 90s and 00s were the golden age of leinster football when Dublin Meath Offaly kildare Louth Carlow Wexford Laois and Westmeath all won leinster titles. Will we ever see a period again in leinster championship, when you basically have three or more top division 1 teams in the provience like we did in those years.

Longford again beat Dublin in Parnell park in 2012. They got to leinster final again at u21 level to be beaten by kildare. I suppose players from the two yrs of u21 are coming through now. I see some kildare names also who were playing in the final. Even last yr, we played Dublin in leinster semi in st lomans ground. Without criticising anyone, we gifted them two goals and probably got as close to them as any one. In relation to the game in two weeks time, we know how difficult it will be. There were some strange team selections over the last three years, in our first leinster championship games against offaly twice and laois. The common denominator was Dublin in the following round. Hope that thinking doesn't come to the fore front again, and we play our best 15 in their best positions and give it a fair crack. For that to happen, we need our best 18 fit for the 70 plus minutes. Meath had a good win last week and confidence will be high. They have great tradition, which can be a factor heading into the final stretch. Obviously heart says Longford at home after a great game. However my head is annoying me!!!!? Could actually have the potential to be the best game yet in championship. Longfordbaz (Longford) - Posts: 145 - 17/05/2018 22:34:06 2101825 Link 1 |
I like what your head is thinking lol. It will be tight, of that there is no doubt. The improvement in Meath is based on fitness and attitude, and been well managed. However all that will count for little next Sunday. I expect a tight tough hard battle. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 18/05/2018 08:19:41 2101867 Link 2 |
I don't know what makes you believe that 31 counties are against Meath, maybe one or two but not all 31. Now if it was a Dublin poster making that claim I would say maybe yea. So get that chip off your shoulder and go out and win and you'll see that I'm right.

This is a 50/50 game, unfortunately we have not improved over the last 3-4 years. Maybe the quality of players available is a problem. There was nothing between the sides when they last met in Navan and it was one of the better games of football. All county teams are well prepared now and fitness generally gives no team an advantage in championship football. Conditions on the day may play a part in the result. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2340 - 18/05/2018 11:15:54 2101914 Link 1 |
Agree 100% with you. As for the fitness levels, ours is through the roof one of the fittest teams now but if the lads don't know what to be doing with the ball it defeats the whole purpose. I'm expecting a very entertaining & challenging game from both sides. Both are going to be so hungry to get this win. Still think we should do it, if we are all on top gear i reckon its a 4pt win from us even a 1pt win and i be happy. But we need all the lads there mentally and not just turn up on the field. Cos if we don't have everyone giving 110% we are going to struggle. No room for any F**k ups or laziness for this game. Loyalroyal17 (Meath) - Posts: 627 - 18/05/2018 12:40:55 2101943 Link 1 |

In fairness all county teams have superb levels of fitness nowadays. The fitness levels shown by Wicklow last week in extra-time were unreal. Meath and Longford will be on a par in that regard so hopefully the Royals footballing ability will see us over the line.

Would have to give longford the nod for this one, they fear no one in pearse pk and certainly wont fear this meath team. 11jm11 (Kildare) - Posts: 364 - 18/05/2018 17:50:17 2102009 Link 3 |
In fairness 31 counties will be shouting for Longford as they are the underdogs. They will be shouting for Carlow next week too. Thats the way it works and I'd be shouting for Carlow in any other game. But not everyone is against Meath either. RD has joeblogs10 from Dublin who is a keen supporter of Meath :) St.Conleth (Kildare) - Posts: 1696 - 18/05/2018 20:20:19 2102029 Link 2 |
Im just talking how fit we have become. This time last year most of the lads hadn't got 35 mins in them let alone 70. Fitness was a major problem for us against the stronger teams. We are a slight step ahead on our fitness than Longford. If we can match that with out game & tactics we are in an excellent position to win this.

Not withstanding injuries, we're reasonably optimistic about our chances of causing an upset on Sunday. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 21/05/2018 10:48:40 2102570 Link 0 |
