Replying To Furlong1949:  "Well done to longford well deserved win.

Meath, well I would say and I know we are all very disappointed. Im sick with disappointment to the pit of my stomach. But it was always going to be this way. We are years behind the top teams. McEntee needs to be given two more years. We will probaly have Forde Mckeever Jones Rooney O Coilean back in next 2 years and some of the underage players will come through. Try to get into div 1 next year. The fact is Dwyer Boylan and McGee had nightmare results in their first 3 years. Boylan hammered by laois , Dwyer walks away frm kildare and McGee losing first round match to div 4 team all in third year in charge. Walsh had hammerings in year 2 v Tipp and year 3 with Rossies. Gilroy had record defeats v kerry in year 1 and Meath in year 2. This part of the course. I know i know this is a gut wrenching sickening feeling to the guts. Criticize the management the team say negative things. You are entitled to be angry and furious. You are right to feel this way. But I plead for the sake of Meath football no knee jerk reactions. As long as McEntee is given another 2 years that is the only chance we have of digging ourselves out of this mess. Armagh gave McGeeney 4 years and he hasnt won 1 single match in Ulster and spent 3 of the last 4 years in division 3. We have to give McEntee the same timescale. If after year 4 the same results then he goes. Use the next two years to develop an sucessor. Someone like Geraghty should be charge of the under 20s.

Again this is bad result in our history. The same as as louth in 75, Wexford 81, Longford 82, Laois 85, Dublin 95, Fermanagh in 03 and 04 , Cavan in 05, Wexford in 06 and 08, limerick in 08, Dublin 14, Westmeath and Derry in 15. The train will leave the station again next year. We arent as bad as we are today. There is light at the end of the tunnell. I believe we are 12 to 24 months away were we want to be. Thats just my opinion I could be right I could be wrong.

We are all hugely disappointed. And you are right to criticise and be angry. But I would plead with Meath supporters that gettin McEntee out aint going to help us in the long run and I believe if he goes this year we more then likely follow the path of laois and Derry to div 4. Thats just my opinion. Thats all.
It is a bad bad day for Meath football. Hugely disappointed. But well done to longford. The better team won."
You are trying to brush up a desperate situation. Of course Longford were the better team, the won didn't they. To compare today with 1985 and 95 does not hold up to scrutiny, on both occasions we lost to teams near the top, Laois were League champions a few years previously and after that the nonsense of multiple selectors was changed. In 95 it was nip and tuck until Clarke's freak goal but then we had two of Meath's best ever defenders to bring in next year namely Darren Fay and Mark O'Reilly. Where is there a Fay or O'Reilly now?

I am on record of not calling for change of management as I believe that continuity is important but it is not possible any more to have confidence in the setup. As well most people knew there was no confidence within the forwards with the amount of ball that dropped innocently into the goalkeeper's hands in the first half. I could go on and on and maybe we should treat going to football matches like going out for a jar or going to a film, something to do but not to take seriously any more.

It was a great match for longford and Denis."
You are 100% correct and you will give Dublin a far better game than we would have. Once the draw was made even before our poor league I knew it was one hell of a banana skin.

I wish youes all the best of luck next time out.

Parts of your post are very strange indeed. Can I ask what has McEntee done in the job so far to warrant another two years in charge?

Okay, lots of people will be hurting (Meath fans) after that defeat and I am not feeling great myself but the truth is that really no one should be surprised at that result. Going on all recent form this was a 50 / 50 game and congratulations to Longford as they turned up and put in a good enough performance in to win the game.

I have not posted here before the game as for the first time in a long long time I had no real interest in going to the game. I have no desire to waste my time watching the type of football we currently employ, nor to witness the lack of character and leadership on the pitch that is so prevalent at the minute, so I stayed at home and hoped that Meath would win for the fans that went and maybe in that performance they might start to sow the seeds of a revival in our fortunes.

Obviously that did not happen and we now face into the qualifiers with confidence close to an all time low.

Whilst it will be tempting for people to lash out in frustration at the situation we find ourselves in, the reality is that all we can hope for at the moment is to try and concentrate fully on the short term and that means winning our next game, getting into the draw for the second round of qualifiers and seeing where that brings us.

As far as I can see at the minute, the team lacks leadership, character and confidence, and without resorting to recrimination or blame. my thoughts would be as follows.

Leadership can come from the players and / or the management and over the next few days someone is going to have to stand up and unite the team fully behind them. Unlike other posters on here, I have no idea how the manager is perceived within the team so I do not know if this is an issue or not but the truth is that he has to find a fix to this problem and quickly, either by his own conviction or facilitating a process whereby leaders are encouraged to stand up and lead by example.

Character is harder to tackle, but having leaders will help and the players themselves will have to be encouraged to leave nothing on the pitch, and having tactics that suit the personnel and the fitness to carry them out will help in that regard.

Finally confidence comes from winning games but also from being comfortable with what you are being asked to do. I do not mean that players are not challenged but that they are comfortable knowing that they have the skills and belief in what they are being asked to do.

The above is a bit 'airy fairy' i know but at this stage the only option we have is to regroup and approach the first round of qualifiers looking to win at all costs. The discussion on our long term strategy can wait now until the championship is
over for us.

Finally, there are some tricky opponents in the draw and we will be outsiders if we draw a good number of teams but sometimes the best time to play a Mayo or a Tyrone is in the first round as they might be vulnerable. At the same time there are teams there that we should still be confident of beating and whoever we draw the only objective for us is to win and progress.

This constant resort to times past is getting a bit tiresome, if we continue to play this style of football then we will be droping to Div 3 next year. There has been no progress whatsoever, we now have a team who play with fear and no confidence. As for the playes listed who might come back, only Forde would make any difference.McKeever has not commited to Meath in the past why would he change his mind now?

a new low for Meath football not that longford beat us but on how poor we were today. why has so many of our best players walked away. I am not saying it's all the mangers faulth but this year is now over and we must get all our best players to play for Meath in 2019 and if the current management can't do that we need someone who can

You r wrong
laois were not league winners previously . Loais hammered in boylans third year in charge in the leinster championship. This laois team won league title in 1986 . Out of completly nowhere from basically div 4. let me explain.

longford in 2018 had better record then laois in 1985. In 1985 no one expected laois to beat Meath. Meath were in divsion 1. Laois were in division 3. Yes longford are in div 3. But they were very unlucky not to be promoted to div 2. In 1985 Laois were very unlucky not to be relegated to div 4. Laois in 1985 finished joint bottom second with Wicklow. There was a relegation play off between laois and Wicklow in 1985 to see who would be relegated to div 4. Laois won. So there was uproar in Meath when laois beat us for it was a massive upset when a team nearly relegated to div 4 beat us. The Meath supporters wanted Boylan gone after laois humilated us.
Even in 1986 league, laois won from div 4. There was restructuring of the league in winter of 86 and div 3 and div 4 were broke into div 3 north and div 3 south. Laois ended up in div 3 south ( the bottom division). Back then there was no div 2 3 or 4 finals. All the top 2 teams of each div 1 2 3 4 went into quater finals. Technically laois won the national league division title ( which today would be called national league division 1 title) from div 4. It is one of the rare examples of a team winning league from div 4 or outside the top 2 divs. That result v Meath and league in 86 was thats all for laois . They never did anything else. So laois in 1985 would be like Wicklow or Offaly beating Meath now. Laois were a div 3 team in 1985 that was nearly relegated to div 4. I think Wicklow had better score difference in 1985 but there was no score difference so if you finished on same points there was relegation play off. Laois result in 85 was a total shock. Todays wasnt.

Gutted as always. We didn't play good enough to win althought at least one of those goal chances would have changed the mood of the game. Hopefully we get a kind draw and can get some games out of the qualifiers . Disappointing as we knew in advance how tough this game was going to be.

To the match itself. Firstly if I was to criticize Andy it would be leaving on Kennelly, O'Sullivan and McMahon for too long. Changes should have been made earlier. We are better than we played today. The players who performed today were colgan, McGill lavin keoghan too a lesser extent burke as his pace let's him down at times. And of course our best player graham Reilly , and there in lays the problem , we have a one man forward line. I'm absolutely gutted. However as always I try to find some shred of hope. I will continue to look for that and get back. As for calling for management head? Ahh come on if we had a management team of micky harte Jim Gavin jimmy McGuiness sean boylan and mick O'Dwyer it wouldn't make a bit of difference . So I ask who's the great manager that will take us over? Let's not forget that Meath championship winners have come and been beat by longford champs including a town team taken asunder by a club with a catchment area of less than a hundred.

Will ye all stop talking nonsense about which disaster was the worst, the past is the past an we need to try and do something about now,, no.1 we all need to realise how bad we are we would of been lucky to beat Longford away,, an we didn't get lucky,, no.2 realise how bad we are and this really isn't that bad of a result. no.3 realise how bad we are and lift the pressure off the players and management. no.4 realise how bad we are

Jesus Christ your posts are terrible. It's like listening to grandpa Simpson. A long post about the league restructurings if 1985 for no apparent reason.
Honestly who cares about what happened in 1985?

McEntee took charge with his tough guy approach which has turned out to be all a load of bluster. His managent has been an unmitigated disaster.

Players have left the panel en masse...the style of football is frankly shameful...he has to go. End of. The whole thing has been a waste of time and effort.

To think that the club championship is being held up for this embarrassing shambles. I'll say it again, inter county football is dead. The GAA in their greed balls it up and you have one professional team playing the rest. Forget about it. Focus on the club championship, pump the meager resources into the clubs and focus on the 99% of footballers in Meath.

agree ,there is no comparison between then and now. Todays lads are expected to put life on hold in order to play for county. Then it was more of an enjoyable pastime, not a way of life.

it's time you Amit you have been badly wrong. we lost about 16 SINCE last July no team can cope with that. if this manger can't get the best players to play for Meath he must stand by his sword the same one you Mr Dunne had for our last manger who tried his best but was not good enough the same as Andy

"The Laois result in 85 was a total shock" my God you mustn't have been at the previous round in Navan v Kildare, one of the worse games ever against a team that was completely demoralized by the treatment dished by the Kildare Co Board to Larry Tompkins following his trip home from the States to play for his soon to be his 'former county'. In any case if Laois did win the League subsequently it proved that they were a fair enough team. I am not going to get stuck on exact detail here.

By the way we may soon be the only county whom Kildare have not beaten but hammered in the in the last year. And you say that the management should stay for two years more. You are brilliant on statistics, I will give you that but I question your wisdom. A guy said once that a certain team was brilliant on paper, but the realist simply replied that games were not played on paper, likewise stats or history count for nothing once you cross the white line. Then it's determination and the execution of a suitable game plan that will in most cases give you a chance to succeed. A good history may give you a sense that 'you belong here' but if you take it to give you a almost Devine right then a very rude awakening awaits you.

Replying To Crinigan:  "Jesus Christ your posts are terrible.

Focus on the club championship, pump the meager resources into the clubs and focus on the 99% of footballers in Meath."
your dead right I could not have said it better myself our manger has our forwards trying to play both as forwards backs and midfield they looked tired and fed up with time nearly up

Why did we loose? Firstly a shocking forwards display, we spurned great goal chances and dropped balls short, apart from Reilly and Burke none of the other starting forwards were any way near good enough. The two Wallace's were a major threat when they cane on and they almost rescued the game for us, but why on so late?? Management should be rightly criticised for the timings of substitutions, they club have been brought on before half time as McMahon and O'Sullivan were both ineffective today and that was evident from early on. Once again we gave the opposition possession from their kick out every single time and it hurt us badly, how many times does it need to happen before we realise we can not give the opposition handy possession from their the kick out, Lomgford were excellent in possession and built well from the back, we allowed them that platform on every occasion, it's supposed to be a battle for possession not a handover and management again must be questioned on this. We didn't show the same level of fight, passion, intensity or determination as Longford did, it looked as if we were afraid of what might come next if we had if won, only when the Wallace's came on did we start showing any fight and effort to actually get back into the game, it was too late. I'm not going to call for heads or go on a mad rant at players because what is the point? what will that achieve? All we can do is have hope that this will turn in the near future, that we might get a favourable draw in the qualifiers and gain some traction but for now we have our Junior team starting championship tomorrow night and a blossoming Minor team in action again this week so let's focus on those and see what the qualifier draw brings tomorrow for the Seniors, hopefully today some lessons have been learnt, we shall see, but ultimately we'll done to Longford and Carlow, both worthy and deserving winners.

Replying To meath1977:  "it's time you Amit you have been badly wrong. we lost about 16 SINCE last July no team can cope with that. if this manger can't get the best players to play for Meath he must stand by his sword the same one you Mr Dunne had for our last manger who tried his best but was not good enough the same as Andy"
The players who left are for the most part. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. And would not have featured today. what is so hard to understand about that??
