The Dubs In Aughrim

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Dublin are set to take on Wicklow in Aughrim in two weeks time. Not all of Dublin's season ticket holders will get a ticket. Will the GAA move it out of Aughrim? It would be some occasion if it goes ahead there!

Well it would be nice for Wicklow but I'd doubt if that will happen.

Will be moved to Tullamore or Portlaois; maybe in Nolan Park. Would be nice for Wicklow but I highly doubt it will remain there.

Wold love it to be in Aughrim.

It actually makes most sense to have it Croker for both counties to be honest logistically.

But a piecemeal away game in portloaise is always fun.

Venue was already set before Wicklow game, Tullamore if Offaly won and Portlaoise if Wicklow won. Portlaoise is a great venue but the parking is crap.

Parking is awful. Get your walking boots on lads and lassies. Pity for such a good venue.

It would be brilliant to have it in Aughrim, Wicklow football is poor, the club scene is awful, we're losing out to soccer and ruby big time so having the dubs in Aughrim would do wonders for getting some hype and enthusiasm back into Wicklow gaa but sadly it won't happen. If it did though imagine it, Aughrim on a sunny day, packed to capacity, the atmosphere would be phenomenal.

Is Parnell park bigger than Aughrim?

You think the parking is bad in Portlaoise? Aughrim has slightly better parking but it's the only thing it has in its favour - I was at the Wicklow v Longford game 5 years ago. Didn't realise that there is NO ATM in the place and the pub/hotel didn't take any sort of card payment. After paying for parking and entry into the match, my hubby and I were horrified to realise we only had about €2 between us and nowhere to spend it - either there was no chipper or it wasn't open!
The icing on the cake was Longford losing and getting a flat tire driving back from the game.
Bring on Portlaoise any day - even with the feckin mayonnaise on their cheese burgers!!!!

It should be Aughrim, what a boost it would be to Wicklow football and the local economy to have the Dubs come to town. The Dubs like travelling and spend freely when they do and bring a great energy and atmosphere and the least Wicklow deserve after their unlikely victory today would be to play the Dubs in their own patch. Wicklow built a fine new stand in Aughrim last year and why go to that expense in improving their facilities if they can't be awarded big matches like this. I know it's a different sport etc but if Man Utd, Man City or some other big Premier League team are drawn away to Accrington Stanley, Hereford or some other small club with a small ground in the FA Cup they travel there irregardless of that grounds capacity and it adds to the magic of that competition and gives a big boost to that small club or town and generates interest and enthusiasm, the same should apply here but it doesn't and dictating venues by overall capacity or the seating capacity is bowing to money and doesn't show a sense of fairness or equality to the smaller counties who don't get many opportunities to host the bigger fish, Wicklow have earned the right by their great win today to play the Dubs in Aughrim but alas it won't happen.

100% agree.

But it looks like we're off to Portlaoise again. I'd rather anywhere but Portlaoise.

Counties like Wicklow could badly do with a game like this in Aughrim. Imagine the boost in interest in the county a visit from the All Ireland champions would bring. The GAA should be nurturing football in these counties, not taking a big day like this away from them. Most likely won't happen but Wicklow deserve their home game just like Carlow did last year. Wake up Croke Park and give these counties the boost they need and have rightly earned.
