Mayo V Galway

Without a doubt a pure garbage game of football. Destroyed by negative tactics, defend with 15 attack with 4 or 5. The rules have to be amended otherwise the game will suffer. I know i wouldn't want to pay to see that. The swarm tackle has to be got rid of, it facilitates this blanket defence. The only contact is with the shoulder all other contact must be on the ball with the open hand. 4 or 5 men around a player and them all swinging away, none making contact with the ball. That's a free on the defenders but the refs will always call it on the ball carrier. It's not Aussie Rules the ball carrier doesn't have to give it up when challenged. The tackle rule is well defined in the Rule Book, if the ref enforces it correctly it will improve the game immensely. Also players faking injuries, making out they got hit in the head when they didn't needs to be handled. Players from both sides yesterday were playacting. Check the video and make them sit for a game problem will be solved.

The problems arise from the fact that the player that came on as a blood sub was black carded later in the game - after the black card unless the injured/bloodied player who went off came back on would this not make the original substitution permanent and hence mean that Galway can't replace the player who was black carded? This would mean Galway used 7 subs but I'm not sure if my deductions are correct - if someone could clarify that would be great."
Surely ye don't fear us if we happen to meet after having our number last July. I note a few Rossy posters questioning our win for various reasons. Would ye be questioning Mayo as much if they had won. We'll never know. Seriously though I would hope mgt have their numbers correct as I counted the max 5 full subs. My understanding is that black card or blood subs can be additional but am not working from a rule book just memory.

I'm afraid a simple question on the rules of the game doesn't imply that Roscommon fear Galway or any other team for that matter and even if I did personally fear another team that would have 0 effect on the Roscmmon team. For good order since the black card was introduced 6 full subs is the maximum allowed including a maximum of 3 black cards - all my query was asking was does the temporary blood sub become permanent when the blood sub that came on is replaced by a different sub and if so have Galway used 1 extra sub than what is allowed?

Cavan? Seriously? I would fancy Mayo to beat Cavan.

At the start of the year I had Mayo as 3rd favourites, I still do. Parsons is a huge loss but we can get away with it if the O Sheas step up. My main concern is fitness of Keegan, if he comes back ok we will be fine and still beat the majority on our day. However our bench is poor again. The David Drake thing is crazy, just a very, very basic player. Not worth his place yet comes on in every game.

I would fancy mayo to beat tyrone and monaghan as well ,mayo won't fear any team in the qualifiers and by then coc will be fully fit and Harrison Vaughan etc fully fit as well also Lee Keegan will be back which is absolutely massive for mayo.
Underestimate mayo at your peril they ate a stubborn bunch

I think if you re read my post it was tongue in cheek. The serious part of same was hoping our mgt had the numbers right as in all truth I don't know off the correct ruling.

The blood sub doesn't count as 1 of the 6, this same thing has come up a few different times. Officially Galway used 6 subs yesterday and 1 blood sub which is within the rules.

One angle makes it look as you say but the second angle shows he smashed his elbow into Conroys face. It looked very calculated, far from accidental. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a broken jaw or teeth missing after that.

I love hard hitting games but somethings I have little time for. Flying elbows to the face are really dangerous and should get a long ban. Tackle on Lee Keegan (Colm Boyle did something similar in the same game) was another type that has crept into the game i.e. shoulder hip into the face. Really dangerous stuff. Players have to go to work on Monday. We are a great country for making excuses for people. he didn't mean it, it was accidental ........ We need our priorities straight and player safety should be top of list."
Fair enough - I didn't see the youtube vid.

I think Tom Parsons is as important a player for Mayo as Brian Fenton is for Dublin. His strength and mobility, as well as excellence in the air, are rare in the game. While both O'Sheas have their attributes neither has the all round athleticism of TP (with Seamus being closer than Aidan). It was obvious again y/day that while everyone knows Aidan is a potential match winner, he's being accommodated in the team without any really well defined role, or at least one that the rest of us can understand. I wondered last year if the tactic of playing him on Donaghy was a matter of giving him something to do, and to be fair to him he did a very good job the second day out having learned from the first. It'd be harsh to say that the midfield and attack were both slicker as a result, because Aidan's been in both sectors on other days when the team has clicked, but yesterday he was like a lost soul at times. Maybe with TP out he'll be committed to the midfield sector, but there's always a bit of a fear that a smart team can set about running him into the ground. It's a perennial question at this stage.

Mayo shot 10 terrible wides, I mean shocking. We had more possession overall in the game, so get your facts right.. Granted it was a poor game but in a big derby game, that doesn't matter.."
If your going to compare yourselves to Mayo's forwards, good luck with that. Comer completely bottled up but Galway continued to kick the ball in. Armstrong very poor. Possession? You are you Sky Sports?

Brolly and O Rourke are so anti Galway, not sure why, we never said we would win Sam to offend them. Our goal is to be competitive in the super 8 and hopefully win Connacht first. The rest of the country can throw 15 behind the ball and they admire it. Tomas O Shea is more realistic and a better analyst. Fed up of RTE haters. Drain the swamp up there in Dublin 4.

Were the Mayo fans booing DOC for getting sent off when the teams went in a half-time?

I thought they were booing the ref for the sending off. To be fair from where I was sitting the DOC tackle didn't look as bad as it actually was so I would've felt aggrieved if it had been a Galway player.

Worst part of the video is you see DOCs pure horror when he sees the ref is right there.

Fair enough - from where I was sitting it looked as bad as it did on TV!

Worst part of the replay is Boyler roaring at the ref after the red card!

I absolutely believe that DO'C deserved the card, but I think it's a bit harsh to adjudge his reaction to be linked to proximity of the ref. He led with the elbow so no excuses, but I believe the contact he made and the damage he did (plus the expected consequences, to be fair) were all in his reaction. He's not known for being some sort of psycho. It's a bit like the Higgins one from last year... I'd never seen Keith do anything remotely like that before... even bookings would be a rarity.

I'll agree with you on Higgins it's very unlike him. But watch the video https://youtu.be/hnWa2hwaV4Y he throws the elbow and swings around to make it looks like Conroy pulled at him and then realises he's face to face with the ref. look at his reaction. He knew he was caught and he knew it was red. He never once looks at the damage to conroy. We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one

The fact that there is no time limit for a blood sub is ludicrous. Conroy missed the entire second-half and it was always clear that there was no prospect of him returning to the game but because he was bleeding, his substitution did not count. Meanwhile Tom Parsons was forced off with a horrible injury but because there was no blood, that one counts. Why is is always so bloody hard for the GAA to create rules that actually make sense and and are fair?
