Its down to priorities. I would say that of the 4 teams you mentioned, all are looking at a provincial campaign with huge 1st round games. Of the 4, I think that Galway have realistic expectations for pushing on later in the year. Not going to be easy, but they obviously don't like the idea of going in the back door to get to the super 8s. They have a lot of development done over the past few seasons. I think that they may see this league campaign as being a necessary risk in their preparations for the Mayo match, and beyond. Also, the percentages of winning a league would be a lot more healthy than an all Ireland.

I also think that we did get our house in order early in the league with solid performances, but 3 of our last 4 games we struggled badly. I would take a bit of encouragement from the Mayo game despite the criticism. Some older players were settling into form last Sunday.

Most of the Cavan panel didn't go back till February.

Don't think Cavan have come close to any sort of a peak since 1997 & before that I think it was 1969. Let's hope this is a good year for the neighbours. Great Division 2 league performance.

Amazing insight across a number of counties - so many inside scoops. Have you considered journalism?

You haven't a clue. With Monaghan for example, a range of players have been coming back at different rates, with certain lads playing their first part in the league at different stages. McManus was used in bits and pieces for a good bit of the league - as opposed to playing every minute like in previous leagues - and Kieran Hughes only came back for the last couple of games really. The team we put out against Mayo on the first day hardly suggests a squad that has been in hard training for months.

In regards to the topic, I wouldn't say peaking is the correct term, but it is important to hit the ground running in May seeing as we are away to Tyrone. If you aren't prepared for a fixture like that then you'd be in trouble. It's very important this year for us to get to the super 8s, like many other counties I'm sure, but whoever loses that opening game in Ulster certainly has a tougher road. But in general, I'd say we used the league well in terms of the panel and the squad strength looks much better than a couple of years ago. We were able to win 5 games in the league while experimenting a good bit and having used 31 players this year. Kerr, Garland and especially Kearns all look like they can make a good contribution in the championship. And the returning Boyle at full back has been excellent, which also frees up Drew Wylie to CHB where he too has had a good league. We only really had a full pick of players(minus injured Barry McGinn) for the last couple of games, and even then it didn't seem clear who was the first fifteen for the championship, which is a positive in terms of competition for places. I would say we look to be hitting a good level of form in time for the Tyrone game(which we'd have to), but I don't see that as being a negative for performing later in the summer, should we reach that stage.

I also agree with this 100%. Maybe I should have suggested 'hitting form' in the league. Seems Monaghan have prepared perfectly for the beginning of the championship and have blooded in new players to boot. We tried the exact same tactic, but struggled badly at the end of the league rather than get the results needed. I think that there is no big hidden agenda here. You probably saw a well prepared Donegal team give it 100% in Ballybofey last sunday. without a couple of injured players yes, but also with a very strong hand out.

I don't want to sound cute, but Cavan are looking like a very well oiled team too. They have won many u21 provincials in the past several years and there is no doubt that we could see some of these lads step up this year. If they are eying the anglo celt, they probably have prepared as perfectly as they could have done for it.
