Leinster - Now A Hurling Province?

Replying To Marlon_JD:  "But sure if you do the same with Kilkenny in hurling, as you're doing with Dublin in the football, then football is still in a much better place. The last Leinster team to win a hurling AI apart from Kilkenny was Wexford in 1996, 22 years ago (I'd be happy if that statistic changed this year, btw).

And are you factoring underage success into this? The last Leinster team outside of Kilkenny to win a minor hurling AI was Offaly back in 1989, 29 years ago. Only one Leinster team outside of Kilkenny has won an U21 hurling AI at all, and that was Wexford back in 1965. And the last time Kilkenny won the U21 AI was in 2008, 10 years ago. For all the underage hurling success Dublin have had at provincial level, it hasn't really translated to national success at minor or U21 level.

That being said, Wexford look to be building on what they achieved last year, which is promising. And there is great work been done across the province, Carlow and Westmeath's success in recent years has been fantastic. Cuala have written themselves into hurlings history books as well. So there is immense potential in the province.
But if hurling was truly more competitive in general in Leinster, or in the country overall, we wouldn't need FIVE tiers in the hurling championship. Realistically, there's a along way to go before hurling can come even close to football in terms of GENERAL competitiveness and/or popularity."
I think you'll find that Offaly won the hurling All-Ireland in 1998, 20 years.

Ah, you're right of course, apologies. Offaly won the AI in 1998, which was a memorable year in hurling in general, so I shouldn't have forgotten.
I think my general point still stands though.

but the original poster is right, leinster is a hurling province and as an equal opportunities supporter of the big ball,i take no privilege in saying that.

all wexfords success has been in wexford park, except of course beating galway in galway, kilkenny in kilkenny last year, waterford in waterford this year.

its better than louths success anywhere!go get your own ship in order."
League wins . They beat Galway in Galway in the league last year . When it came to championship Wexford were completely out gunned in Croker in the Leinster Final . They can certainly put it up to teams but I feel they don't have enough to beat both Kilkenny and Galway . There's a lot being said about how open the championship is this year . I don't feel that the new format helps that . The depth of teams squads will be a huge factor . I think Galway and Tipp are ahead when it comes to that . Galway are sluggish at the moment and it is not easy to turn that around at this stage of the year . Having said that it is still hard to see past Galway and Kilkenny in Leinster .

They may not win an all ireland but will take a serious scalp!
No wonder there is little hurling in Louth with your attitude, sure we should of just given the liam McCarthy to kk every year and just give the Sam to dublin and not bother. Would really suit the clubs."
Wexford will take a scalp and they will be hard to beat but they don't have enough to win it . Stop being so touchy . There is plenty of hurling in Louth and I support it . You asked a question and I gave you an honest answer . It's not my fault if you don't like what I said .

I'll bow to their superior knowledge but I'd have a tender with each of them that Wexford won't win Liam McCarthy. Less of your sneering at Louth's hurlers and hurling people. They are great people and don't deserve to be sneered at . It's lately Wexford became competitive again and we're all delighted to see it . Those hammerings they endured at Kilkenny's hands did no one any good . Just carry your competitiveness with good grace .

Ah lads, don't be bickering. Galway & Tipp are the 2 strongest teams in the country for the last 2 years. Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford, Clare, Cork & Limerick are snapping at their heels. An exciting championship awaits! If we could get Dublin & Offaly back into that chasing pack it would great altogether.
