Month into it now and the abuse from sideline at underage games has been a big surprise. Not saying I've been perfect ref, far from it but it's been a real eye opener. Can't be a good example for young players going forward

Very hard to deal with it in correct fashion.
If its a coach or the terms i never use as from my experience thats all or thats not at all what they were for me in GAA "mentor", "selector"
If its a coach, "mentor", selector then then have a word if the abuse gets out of hand and sanction them if necessary.

Are you referring to abuse from coaches/players on sideline or "fans"? Big difference. You can or at least should be able to sanction/penalise coaches/players on sideline who are giving you abuse

unfortunately that's not gonna change, some parents and coaches at underage should be ashamed of themselves, don't let it get to you and keep the head up.

You could say the same about coaches and supporters at adult level.

Pack it in and do something else. Its not worth the aggravation and abuse.

If every new ref was told that then what would you do?

To the first question, it's mostly parents or people not involved with coaching set up of either team. Get some shouts from managers, selectors but not at level of other people at games.

All you can do is ignore it but if whats said goes in your opinion too far above the top then report the club/person involved.

Was at a GAA seminar recently regarding underage protection of players and this actually came up. If you get abuse from supporters whose kids are involved you are entitled to contact the juvineille laission officer of the offending club. He in turn has a duty to have a word with the offending parent/parents. If the club is a progressive one that can see the wider picture they should clamp down on these types. As these parents have signed a form to adhere to club rules when they register their kids to play. Hope that helps.

On referee course years ago the tutor (a ref himself) said "I don't care if you are crap just so long as the crap is consistent". You won't please anybody so don't even try just do your job as honestly as you can, very few will clap you on the back.

On a similar topic, while taking an U14 match, the manager of one team roared one of his players name and told him "he's f***ing useless". Should a ref take any action at this?

I dont know the GAA rules but yes a ref should take action because that is disgraceful and a coach of kids team should never be allowed coach again if acting like that. That is disgraceful

Absolutely , that's verbal abuse of a minor. We want kids playing our games, not turning away from them.

furthermore the county board should be getting a report on the "performance" of such coaches after games... that has to be eliminated
