Donegal vs Galway

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This could be a nice tight affair now. Donegal would love to get revenge on Galway from last year's heavy defeat in Sligo. Both teams done well yesterday with Donegal coming short by one by a good decent Kerry team and Galway coming on top by 4 to a poor Tyrone team.
Think that Bonner is perfect for Donegal as they seem more open to play and attack more. They look to have a talented young team on the rise with the likes of Ban, McGonigle, Mullins etc etc.
McBrearty looks to be in flying form, can't wait till Murphy is back.
As for Galway the youth coming up great with the likes of Kelly, O'Ceilliagh, Mullkerrin, Cunningham, Conneely, Cooke etc etc.
Kerin looks to be strong in defense and O'Ceailliagh looks to be the option for number 3 as he is doing well and seems to be one of the best full backs in years for Galway. Cooke has to remain in mid along side Conroy for the rest of the year. Brannigan and Walsh look in great shape with Comer looking stronger than ever.
Looking forward to this one, looks to be an entertaining enough game.

if donegal play like they did yesterday, we will win, but we have a terrible record in letterkenny. Great to see Bonner trusting his players ability and letting them express themselves, unlike the fear based football of the previous regime. hopefully Boyle will retain the no 1 slot, his kickouts are badly needed and he made a tangible difference on his introduction yesterday.

If you tip Galway it means Donegal will win...

Is Michael Murphy expected to be back for this game or is he out for the medium term?

He is out for a few weeks yet, not alone that but 5 of our regular 6 defenders are missing as well.

It should be a good game but I fear the deciding factor might well be the venue as Donegal have a horrendous record in Letterkenny. Can't figure out why, it's a fine pitch, but we just never play well there.

Mind you, this is a game Donegal need to win & will have targeted so a cautious home vote for me.

Oakleafer tipped Galway to beat Tyrone yesterday against the odds and was proven right. Your own prediction was that Galway would struggle. I think Donegal will win this one as they looked dangerous yesterday in Killarney but it's amusing to see you have a go at a posters predictions after yesterday.

I'll take Galway by 2 points. Should be a good match.

I'd be confident enough only for the venue, it's a must win really and we showed very well against Kerry in tough circumstances. Just in terms of fight and desire I was very happy with the second half against Kerry, so hopefully that will continue this weekend - but again, our record in Letterkenny is just bafflingly bad so it's anyone's guess what we might see.

I think we can win this game. I hope it goes ahead. The forecast over the next few days is very bad. I think that Galway will be looking at preserving their best form for home games. They will be trying to win this one, but I think that if they go all out and lose it, that might set them back. Donegal on the other hand face a must win scenario. I think if Galway win on Sunday, we are most likely heading for division 2 next year. We will see.

A big game for Donegal for sure and a chance to exact a small bit of revenge for last summer's humbling below in Markievicz. We showed plenty of fight and no little skill against Kerry the last day. But our record in Letterkenny is woeful. It's hard to put your finger on it as the pitch is top class. For whatever reason we can never seem to get it right playing there. I think it's over 10 years since we last won there (Kerry in the NFL the year we won it?)

I'd also be very worried about big Comer if he plays in at full forward. Whoever is playing full back will need cover.
That said, we showed enough attacking threat against Kerry to be reasonably confident.

Galway lads - how did Sean Andy do the other day at full back for yez? I've been very impressed any time I've seen him play. It could be worth the admission fee alone to see him do battle with Paddy.

Lockjaw...he did quite well against Tyrone albeit I don't think he was tested much in that game. He's still young and will take time to develop to his full potential. A good league debut nonetheless. He is the best prospect we've had in that position for quite a while.

Cooke at midfield is another promising player from last year's under 21's who had a good game against Tyrone.

We beat monaghan there in 2014 in league division 2. They beat us in the division 2 league final a couple of months later.

Just a heads up for those coming from Galway and the south of the county, that the main road between ballybofey and letterkenny is closed this weekend and you'll probably be diverted via Lifford, allow plenty of time folks as it's generally a disaster trying to get parked and over to the ground on a normal match day.

You would hardly send people all the way down to Lifford .Plenty of closer diversions than that.

Yes Peter Cooke was very impressive last year as well. An intriguing game in store on Sunday. Have yez any injuries or men missing? Looks like we definitely will be without Murphy, Neil and Jason McGee, McGlynn, McGrath, McGinley and Eoin McHugh for one reason or another.

Galway are definitely missing the Corofin contingent, Michael Daly, Fintan O'Currain & Danny Cummins. O'Donnell & Armstrong were both thought to be out until mid Feb but both came on as injury time subs on Sunday, doubt either will start on Sunday.

Of the Corofin lot, Power, Silke & Ian Burke are part of what I'd consider Galway's best 15 as are Daly, O'Donnell & Armstrong although I'm not a huge fan of O'Donnell.

So that makes 6 of Galways best 15 playing missing along with 4 others who've played a huge part the last few years.

Donegal will bounce back on Sunday I don't see us reproducing that game plan against them

This could go any way. I always thought Tyrone were overrated (not saying they are a bad team but never had them as top 3 team).

In my mind Dublin level 1, Kerry below that followed closely by Mayo. The rest in D1 can beat each other on any given day. Kerry & Mayo are also well beatable but seem to get better as year goes on. On that basis all is up for grabs in D1 this year with exception of Dublin.
