Galway vs Tyrone

How do you think they will be making more money by having the 2 games on at different venues? The hurling in Salthill is due to finish 10 minutes before the football in Tuam starts. A double header in Salthill would be much more attractive for the casual fan and would surely see a bigger crowd than the combined total from 2 seperate games. If anything splitting the games is going to cost them money surely?

yes the "Suckvalley" is totally ignored, total waste of a great pitch, I think Duggan Park has 10,000 capacity, not sure

Does income from league games not go into a central fund them get divvied out later in year (question not statement)? If that's the case no benefit in having games on in 2 locations.

Either way, bad move. Galway have poor support and need to be building a brand with double headers & making the match day an experience rather than just get soaked watch game go home.

Even the pricing of the season ticket this year is stupid. Actually costs more if your bringing a child! They are pricing in the guaranteed AI Final ticket. Why not have full grounds for league games with cheaper tickets. Price won't stop me going but it will stop others. Short termism......... Exactly what u expect to be honest!

I said money grabbing so and sooooooo. And hear is who I think stand to benefit from the match chance. Obviously a economic boost to Tuam town. Suppermacks will benefit as we all know that on a busy day in pearse stadium suppermacks have large amounts of people waiting to purchase this makes them unproductive and unable to reach manimium potential profits. Where as now the Tuam match suppermacks has a better chance of increasing its profits. The lads on the gate the lads inside steering people will be on a winner as not all of them would have been needed in salthill. The shop inside Tuam stadium, I could go on. In summary the money makers here are official's, sponsors and Tuam stadium.

I love " me county" but you have to call a spade a spade, Tuam stadium is not fit for purpose. In my younger days I have many great memories on the terraces but I am getting old now and I much prefer to sit in the stand when I go to a match. Well Tuam stadium stand no matter where you sit you are blocked by the front beams from getting a full view of the match oh if it rains you will get wet with all the holes in the roof. Tuam needs to be redeveloped B4 it holds a national league match.

So you think the game is changed because Pat McDonagh, a man worth a few €100 million, saw it as a chance to sell a few 100 more burgers from 1 of his franchises? Not that the county board, who originally fixed the double header, are worried that the Pearse Stadium pitch can't hold 2 games and believe it would be easier to rearrange a fixture between 2 local school teams if it has to be called off on the day than a game between the county footballers and Tyrone? Some people are obsessed about money alright but I'm not sure it's who you think it is.

Of course Suppermacks dont need the extra money, and I was only using them for my argument. the officials might like the extra money for working that day. Tuam stadium needs any revenue it can get. Many posters on Hoganstand have expressed the view that until Tuam gets redeveloped it should not hold a national league match. I have previously said that Galway football has a low fan base and needs to get the hurling fans on board, the double header in Salthill was a perfect opportunity for that.

we are where we are now, good-look to both the footballers and Hurlers, I would have loved to see the Galway footballers in action, but I am sailthill bound and for my sins I will now have to tune into Ollie Turner God help me.

Pearse Stadium is good to go for the double header if Tuam isn't up to it..... so it all makes sense why it was originally changed.

OMG pitch inspection in Tuam on Thursday good chance we will have the double header after all

Any more rain around Galway and both the Hurling and football games will be off. Pitches very bad in Galway now and the recent U21 football final had to be moved to Mayo to play it. We had the same problems with Hyde park in 2016 and had to play home games in Longford and Leitrim. Changed times now however as the new pitch in the Hyde will host a football and hurling double header on Sunday.

Lads and Lassies below is copied from RTE sports and answers the question as to why the decision to play in Tuam was taken.

"""Plans for Galway to play an Allianz League double-header this weekend were changed due to weather concerns and a desire to play a game at Tuam Stadium, RTÉ Sport has learned.

The All-Ireland hurling champions make their Division 1B bow against Antrim at Pearse Stadium in Salthill at 1pm on Sunday.

That was to have been followed by the Division 1 football clash between the Tribesmen and Tyrone at 2.30pm but it emerged last week that rather than risking two games at one venue the latter fixture had been switched to St Jarlath's Park in Tuam.

"There was some concern over the weather we were having and rather than leaving it to the last minute it was changed to Tuam," Galway football secretary Seamus O'Grady told RTÉ Sport.

"The downside is that it's Galway's first match after the All-Ireland so the supporters would have probably liked to have the two games together.

"It's a bit unfortunate but that was the decision that was made two weeks ago."

O'Grady told RTÉ that no tickets had been sold before the decision to separate the fixtures.

Tuam is in the northern football heartland of the county and has traditionally served as a venue for the bigger-ball code.

The stadium's capacity has been reduced in recent times to 6,700 but Galway have remained keen to play occasional league fixtures there, ahead of a planned redevelopment this year.

O'Grady said that the meeting with Tyrone was considered the best game to switch in terms of travelling support expected.

"We want to have a match in Tuam," he said.

"Mayo and Dublin are two of the teams (Galway face at home). There was a question mark whether Tuam would be able to accommodate the crowds so they're scheduled to be played in Pearse Stadium.

O'Grady doesn't expect the double-header against Limerick (hurling) and Monaghan (football) scheduled for March to be affected.

Last weekend's scheduled FBD league clash between Galway and Roscommon at Tuam was cancelled following heavy rain but O'Grady is hopeful Sunday's game won't be affected.

In the event that it is, however, the initial plan of playing both games at Pearse Stadium may yet be revisited.

"Maybe they had one eye on this weekend's game and they didn't want to plow up the pitch," he said of Sunday's cancellation.

"We'll look at the pitch in Tuam tomorrow and make that decision. The way the weather is in Galway today, unless there's an improvement, we'll certainly be looking at the pitches.

"I presume Pearse Stadium will be okay to take the two matches (if necessary)."

Lord above..

I booked the weekend off (hard in my line of work) originally planning to have the Saturday night in Galway, then take in the double-header in Pearse on Sunday. Then saw that the football had been changed to Tuam and, as it will be our first top flight game in 7 years, decided to watch the footballers in the old stadium.

The way things are going it will be a weekend in front of the telly watching the FA Cup...

Good choice Tyronecelt, you can have Paddys night in Westport.

Back to the game- What's the feeling in Tyrone? With the weather as it is it could be a dogfight, something we're not so good with here in the West...
