Kerry VS Donegal

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just a week away till the League starts next Saturday. Can't Wait.
On Sunday, Kerry vs Donegal could either be an absolute dreadful match or an entertaining enough match.
Donegal will need to show that last year is to be forgotten about after two embarrassing defeats to Tyrone and Galway. I have a feeling that Clifford will be starting which is a huge bonus for Kerry.
Bonner will want this win but he is without a few key players such as Murphy, McGee and McGlynn which is a disadvantage. I think Kerry will scrape a win here my a narrow enough margin.
Kerry 2+

Going to be a very young and inexperienced Kerry side linning out due to injuries, breaks, club commitments, so hoping they'll do well and show their up to this level. But wouldn't be as confident as normal as usual, Donegal have had 4 games under their belt already and are putting up good scores.
But great the League is back.

Think Kerry will win this with a bit to spare. I know Kerry are missing players but Donegal are missing vital leaders are over the pitch so it will be a young Donegal team. If Donegal can get good quality ball to McBrearty and players to support him Donegal may have a shout but I don't think that will happen enough to beat Kerry.
Anyone know if Clifford will start?

Haven't seen our boys play since Mayo hockey'd Us last August so it's hard to call, I'd hope home advantage might help and as long as fitz doesn't 7,2,5 formation or was it a 9,2,3 formation like he did against Mayo we might have a chance of a win.

Expecting an entertaining game here. Donegal seem to be adapting a more attacking approach this year based on games so far this year. Kerry notoriously slow starters in the league but generally strong at home. Plus have a strong record against Donegal enhanced further in the league meeting between the sides last year. My worry from a Donegal perspective would be the full back line. While Kerry will have an experimental line up I expect that the Kerry inside forward line will be strong, the same line which tore Donegal to shreds last year in LK. Donegal have been putting up big scores but also conceding alot hence why I think this game will be entertaining. It will be very interesting to see if 2 of the biggest future stars in the GAA get much game time in David Clifford and Niall O'Donnell. I fully expect Clifford to make an immediate impression at senior level as I think he has the physique and will only get stronger. Niall on the other hand is probably a couple of years away in that regard but is such a talent that he must be tested in the league. I think Kerry will win an entertaining game. Watch out for Paddy McBrearty who is in the form of his life and finally producing what his talents merit. His brother Stephen has also started the year well so be interesting to see how he fares throughout the year. Other Donegal players to watch are Nathan Mullins who has had a very good start since rejoining the Donegal squad and could be quite a find. Also Darrach O'Connor showing signs he is over all his injuries and hopefully producing what he has threatened to produce since appearing on the scene in 2014.

Hoping for a good game & while I would favour a Kerry win, both teams will be without key players so I wouldn't write Donegal off.
This is very much a new Donegal team & new manager Declan Bonner seems to be adopting a more open attacking style with, shock horror, foot passing to the fore. They are putting up big scores but also conceding more than I would be comfortable with,
Kerry by 4-6

It's hard to make any sort of prediction with any confidence for this one. By all accounts Kerry will be missing a host of experienced players but the fact that they're at home, and well - they're Kerry will mean it will still be a very difficult game for Donegal to get anything out of. A poor enough Armagh team caused us a lot of bother on Saturday night with direct ball into the full forward line so it might be something that the Kingdom will target.

That said, we won't go down there to make up the numbers either. Paddy is in great form, I think he's scored 1-16 in his two outings to date. We'll need to get him on the ball early and get men around him to support him. But others will need to step up as well, and no better place than down in Kerry.

I would hazard a guess that this will be our starting 15.

1. McGinley

2. Ward
3. Doherty/McMenamin
4. Ban Gallagher

5. R McHugh
6. McLoone
7. McClenaghan

8. Mullins
9. McFadden

10. O'Reilly
11. MacNiallais/M McHugh
12. McGonigle/Carroll

13. O'Connor
14. McBrearty
15. Brennan

At least you can hazard a guess with your fella's Lockjaw! Most of us in Kerry have little notion who exactly is in training at the minute, let alone what a possible starting 15 would be. But those from outside the county will probably see a few unrecognizable names when the team is announced Friday night.

As for Clifford, well the feeling is they might not risk him, but if his in the squad I don't see why they don't give him some game time as quickly as possible to test the water.

Interesting team lockjaw, I know numbers and positions don't matter a jot these days on any team but ban Gallagher at cornerback? Also I always thought of mcloone as more of a wingforward!
Also is Mcclenaghan ye'r minor captain from 2014?

Yeah we might need Ban in there. At least until Paddy McGrath is back.
Leo is very versatile so I wouldn't be surprised to see him line up anywhere from #5 up.
I'm not sure if McClenaghan was captain in 2014 but he was definitely a starter on that team.

As you say though, numbers mean nothing these days so I would expect to see a lot of chopping and changing, especially between the half forward and half back lines. Odhran MacNiallais excluded of course. The further he plays up the field the better.

Stephen McBrearty is back in the squad and playing well. Came off the bench and scored 3 points against a poor Armagh team at the weekend. The squad as a whole is looking much stronger than last year especially with Leo and Odhran back. Leo a big player to have back involved. He does divide opinion among Donegal supporters but personally I would have him as one of the first players on the team. Strong on the ball, calm in possession and brings physicality we were lacking last year. I don't think the younger players coming through have shown their true potential on a national stage yet and are probably a couple of years away yet. Last years U-21's faltered against the Dubs and of course the same with the minors against Galway though they did against Cork in the quarter final that they were a talented bunch. This years U-21's I am certain would win Ulster again if competition still running and possibly have made a mark outside. As for the weekend I still think Kerry will win despite the players missing. The talent pool coming through is incredible. I am expecting a good game though even if worries about Donegal defensively remain esp if Geaney or O'Donoghue are involved.

McClenaghan was Centre back on the 2014 minors and one of their best players. The captain was Niall Harley who played midfield all year. He wasnt started in the final but came on as a sub and was then taken off again. Bonner is prone to erratic selections and substitutions.

Thanks lads I remember mcclenaghan, he was marking Brian rayle in the final and kept him quite enough , it was a good battle.
As for Declan Bonner I can't say much about him being erratic as our own manager is prone to mad decisions him self.

Aye McClenaghan is a tough lad. I've been on the receiving end of one of his hits. There's a reason they call him Timber!

I think a lot of the main protagonists from the battle of Tralee will be missing this weekend so I can't see another one developing. There will be a lot of young, hungry players involved who will be keen to make a mark so hopefully they'll stick to the football.

Really looking forward to seeing the starting lineups. I won't make it to the deep south this weekend but I believe TG4 has deferred coverage.

Premier Sports UK normally show the TG4 deferred game live if you can get access to it. Some pubs will have it or else a link on Mobdro would be your best bet.

Yeah I think I got Premier Sports on Mobdro before so I must try that out. I could try to avoid the score and watch the deferred coverage but I don't think I'd resist the temptation to keep up to date on Twitter!

Sorry to hear you won't make it down lockjaw but it's understandable as it's some journey in fairness, we were in letterkenny last year and we stayed in Donegal town on the Saturday.
