2018 Connacht FBD League

Replying To WanPintWin:  "That's the hope. He looks like he all the attributes needed and was outstanding in last year's U21 campaign. He's physically very strong, aggressive but also has plenty football in him. Senior is still a very big step up.
I was at the U21 final and he won every single 1-on-1 ball played into O'Callaghan in the first half. Con was moved out to the half forward line before half time.
It's a position we're in desperate need to fill, so the league will tell us a lot."
I think if Galway could get a solid full back and centre half back they'd be in a great position. Ye've decent backs apart from that with Kerrin, Liam Silke, Bradshaw, O'Donnell and young Molloy from Corofin.

Replying To MayoDan:  "Only listened on the (Galway biased) radio myself but it was generally accepted that Comer threw an elbow. Sean Andy got a second yellow or possibly a black, possibly for the last foul?"
To be fair to Comer he had a man on his back and was only trying to get him off it, he was no where near hitting him an elbow and it was mad how he didn't get a free in. its a pity they didn't show it on the highlights id really like to see it again. After viewing the Sean Andy incident again he must have said something to the ref cause he wasn't involved in play at all and just got mad when the mayo player fell over and got a free for it

Replying To Spoddgy:  "Player of the year. Hey at least there's a greater chance of winning a game in super 8s there will be matches outside croke park."
I'm sure in 20 years time the people of Ireland will remember who was player of the year 2017.

Replying To LeftHalfBack10:  "Anyone know where I can get the full fixture list for the 2018 Connacht FBD League? The Connacht GAA website is a disaster for fixtures and results in comparison to the other provincial websites. I have our own fixtures thanks to Mayo GAA."
Looks like they've updated it in the meantime, but still it's pretty shoddy of them not to have fixtures in December for games in January on their website.

The website is not exactly what you would call user friendly.

A good run out for both teams in poor conditions at the Hyde yesterday. Nothing to take from it though.

Galway and Roscommon now have to play out a dead rubber game on Sunday before meeting in the final. Connacht GAA say they 'have to protect the integrity of the competition'. If both teams want to double up the fixture let them go ahead. Cork and Clare were in a similar situation in the McGrath Cup where they were due to meet in the third round of the McGrath Cup as well as the final and they doubled up.

With Andy winning we will probably still be hearing about it and how there's a anti dubs biased.

So the Connacht Council want another gate to make up for the money they had to return following the mess that was Mayo v Galway last Sunday week.

Galway and Roscommon should play next Sunday. If the Connacht Council present a cup so be it but that should be the end of it..... they should not bother with the so called final. Players are been asked for too much.... with college and club games and NFL something has to give.

Agreed. Move the game to wherever it would be played if it were a final and be done with it. I don't think the competition's integrity would be damaged by not playing the last group game between the two teams that are already in the final. There's nothing else at stake e.g. ranking points or home advantage in the final.

Only thing at stake is gate receipts for connacht council, with all the big attendances they may feel (mistakenly) this will be a missed opportunity .. people will not go out to see the shadow boxing before the main event

Alot of the players will be happy playing the game this weekend, another chance to show what they can do and a game is far better than a training session.
Not good for the fans though, don't think anyone would be expecting any kind of a crowd this weekend.

Prenty (Connacht Council) is mistaken when he calls Galway/Kildare league game "dead rubber" last year, Galway had to win to get promoted. What a joke.

The main problem is playing the FBD final on Feb 18th in the middle of the NFL that was meant to be a free weekend. Who thought that was a good idea? I think the time has come for John Prenty to step down from his position and allow someone else with a bit of common sense to take over this Connacht council job

Obviously Prenty and co. have no problem dispensing with their concern for player 'welfare' when it suits them. As to his comment on the 'integrity of the competition', I would be more concerned with the integrity of the 'Body' making this decision. I wonder what the reaction will be if both teams agree to rest all the players who will be involved in the first League game!

I'm no Prenty fan but is in not Roscommon man Rock that sits on the throne these days?

Also dead runner game or not, name one competition anywhere that cancels the final round of games if deemed meaningless?

Everyone knew at the beginning that the FBD league final was being played in the middle of the NFL. Hey on with it.

Galway and Roscommon will field experimental sides on the 18th of Feb. This is unfortunate but just read the Prenty statement, full of falsehoods about dead rubber games. Time for him to move on, and any other ejit on that council. McStay and Galway players called for the final to be this Friday, makes sense, council must show flexibility.

Rocks role is honorary position while Prenty runs the Connacht GAA and has done for a few decades now. Its the same at HQ with a Cavan man in honorary position while Monaghan man Mr Duffy sits on the throne.

Read back on this thread and you will see McGrath canceled the last round of games to allow Clare and Cork to be the final.

Fair enough but the McGrath Cuo is not called after a commercial entity. I reckon all games have to be played as per contract with FBD.

Anyway way too much is made of this pre season tournament.

That the same prenty that pulled connacht out of railway cup for player welfare.

Would be little made of this if the pre season tournament played its final during the pre season instead of playing it in the middle of the NFL season.
