Joe is a great player. Ben O Connor was a great player too. I have been lucky to see them both play. Enjoy watching Joe play. Such talents are rare.

I know the Cannings. Our families hail from the same mighty metropolis of Gortanumera. Admittedly I'd know the older lads and the dad more so than Joe but what you witnessed on the Late Late is representative of the Cannings as a family. Decent and wonderful people who's regard and consideration for others often outweighs their own personal challenges.
The fact that they also provided Portumna and Galway with some mighty hurlers is a very happy coincidence as far as I'm concerned.

Replying To The_Bull:  "joe has gone missing in countless numbers of games. Ben O Connor was the most consistent hurler between 2003 to 2007. He had unrivalled skill and pace and produced match winning performances at both club and intercounty level. Cork played and far superior level of opposition during this period too. Joe has had games against a lot of handy teams in leinster. Don't give me this garbage either about John Fenton. I would highly recommend you watch some old videos of this man if you can find them. Joe wouldn't touch this mans skill levels. Brian Corcoran the most versatile player hurling every produced and was a dual player up to around 1998. Texaco hurler of the year 1992 and hurler of the year 1999. Joe is building a brand. RTE become obsessed with some players and catapult them beyond their greatness. As I previously alluded to Joe has gone missing in more matches than he played well in."
Howya Jerry!

Insane comment. If Joe Canning was born in Kilkenny people would liken him to Christy Ring, Eddie Keher, Mick Mackey et al as one of the all time greats - he is the player of his generation, spectacular hurler in every sense.

Replying To The_Bull:  "Playing hurling has provided Joe with plenty of business and financial opportunities including college scholarships. There are only very few players who reap the commercial opportunities provided through advertising etc. Joe has built a profile and appears very eager to build an image through the media. I wouldn't be a fan of Joe. He was a exceptional underage player but is not an in the category of players like Henry Shefflin, Ben O'Connor, Nicky English, John Fenton, DJ Carey, padraig maher, Brian Corcoran."
Your a bit unfair and unkind with these comments, Joe is gentleman and I can tell one they give out college scholarship for just about anything now and if anyone deserves one surely Joe Canning does?

I've always admired Joe Canning as a player and as a man. It's such a pity that some people think that great players have to be denigrated to laud the players of their choice. Different players, different times, different styles, different circumstances. It was such a pleasure to watch them all play. They come from all counties at all times.

Great interview from a great player. Galway and Portumna are lucky to have him.

Joe Canning is everything you'd want your children to be. A perfect role model and exceptional hurler. I won't compare him to the other players as they were unique and exceptionally talented in their own unique way..but as Galwayman I wouldn't swap Joe Canning for the pick of the bunch.

Merry New Year.
