From a business point of view you can see why he's doing it though it looks a cynical. Not many locals are gonna flock into the ship looking for shows if it was managed by any of Donie's family. But they will for Donie Vaughan the county star who plays for the local club.

exactly correct, Donie owes nobody any explanation, great servant to Mayo GAA. But I have to say honestly that Donie, Jason and Cillian are holding back Mayo from glory, Rochford will be cutting a bunch of them for championship imo.

So Stephen Rochford is going to win Sam by dropping Vaughan and Doherty?!!! As for dropping Cillian O'Connor that it literally madeness! COC is on course to become the leading all time scorer in Cmahpionship Football history within the next couple of years! The man is a once in a lifetime phenomenon! Couldn't agree more. A ridiculous post from a galway poster. Cillians scoring is over the course of his senior career is right up there. Problem is people think he should be able to do everything when physically he can't. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 16/12/2017 15:55:27 2065350 Link 1 |
I don't know Donie Vs personal situation. But if he lives in Castlebar AND he sees himself continuing to live there and rear a family, then yes he should transfer in order to help cement his family roots for the future etc. Too many lost souls in GAA who moved to another area and never joined that club before they quit playing and now have no feel or connection to the club their kids play with. Also I am am rural man. And rather than crying into our porridge every morning about rural clubs folding and the youth going to towns and cities, it is time us rural folk demanded our politicians get some resources and jobs and Internet into the countryside. That is the only way our clubs will survive. Pontificating that Ballinrobe is only 20 minutes from Castlebar is bull, get proper facilities and job opportunities into rural Ireland and the youth will stay. Instead of hammering Donie, hammer the TDs whose policies take so many of our players away cos I spent 17 years making 2 hour round trips for both football and hurling and instead I should have had chances to get job at home rather that go away. Driving is no joke and when I signed away beside where I lived the ball was way way more enjoyable. theborderfox (Monaghan) - Posts: 138 - 16/12/2017 16:23:05 2065352 Link 0 |
yes I domiciled in Mayo for a bit and I am a Galway poster but I am right. I thought madness was doing the same thing every year and expect different results? Was hoping Mayo could do it this year but alas. See you on May 13, keeping those players will suit Galway. maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1196 - 16/12/2017 16:44:28 2065353 Link 0 |
I don't think your right....dropping Cillian O Connor from the Mayo squad would be ridiculous.

Donie has to earn a living outside of football and when his playing days are over. Club and county loyalties are very important but it's understandable if they put their future career above such loyalties. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7345 - 17/12/2017 07:59:48 2065380 Link 1 |
His store in Ballinrobe will take a hit? I hope not but he has opened himself up to criticism with this move big time

The Ballinrobe store probably won't be affected Yew Tree as that's the family business. I think, with his profile, it's a smart move for the Castlebar store as he'll also be the local player. Many GAA players have used their GAA profile to further their business and political ambitions. It's only a short trek from Ballinrobe to Castlebar but throughout a year being based in Castlebar saves him some time, including county commitments, that could be used to further his business.

Donie should play for any team that will have him, he has plenty in him for the county also. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1669 - 19/12/2017 10:36:36 2065578 Link 1 |
What a load of crap..he lives 20 mins away.i don't know about the rest of ye but I could never change club unless I was living 3 hours away and then you have no option.. but to transfer to your neighbouring club I cant understand.

There's a transfer procedure in place to facilitate a player moving from one club to another. I believe this was followed. Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1415 - 21/12/2017 13:26:53 2065778 Link 0 |
Probably to put down roots in Castlebar. His profile will already bring in a good few customers. Playing for Mitchell's can only help his business even more. Not the first GAA player to use his profile to further his business, definitely won't be the last. Plus add up those 20 mins each way to club and county training for a full year and that's his own time for business, relax, whatever. Many's a player who couldn't commit to club or county because of business, studies etc but he's committed for 2018.
