When are we playing Galway? Underage has become so depressing the last few years for Mayo...something seriously wrong here yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11230 - 25/05/2018 22:47:30 2103877 Link 4 |

Play Galway on June 29th. An educated guess would say most of the money in Mayo in spent on the senior team and the management team of Buckley,McEntee and Rochford are very pricey while the underage teams are left with slim pickings.

What rubbish. Money doesn't get you good players. Good coaching builds good players. Also there is as much money available to the mayo minor as galway and roscommon.

It's used to be all about the schools. If was happening there then the intercounty setup had something to harness. Kerry's recent minor success went hand in hand with the success of its schools at A level and the Ulster schools have always been great feeders to good county minor sides. However U17 is younger than schools senior now, so getting a core of players straight from a good schools team into the county side isn't as likely as it was. It means that the processes to draft and develop players and a build team will be much more of a county administered thing. Galway's pick at underage levels is something which Mayo and the other Connacht counties will find ever more difficult to contend with as the populations of the counties diverge. Mayo were always able to match Galway's football pick, but that's not going to be the case if the county is destined to be turned into some tourism backwater. The gap is there now and it's set (in plans) to grow. Pericles (Mayo) - Posts: 2521 - 02/07/2018 10:49:42 2117566 Link 0 |
Good coaching and preparing players to the best of their ability costs a lot of money nowadays. Put a little more thought into a reply before rubbishing the opinion of someone in the know.

I'd didn't say it that it doesn't cost money I suggest that good coaches make the difference. You should read comment before you put up silly remarks.
