No draw for Tier 2 hurling counties

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Says a lot about how the Gaa look at the Tier 2 hurling counties that there
was no fixture list made with the McCarthy cup counties last night.

Imagine if the Gaa had shown the Leinster group fixtures but ignored
the Munster group.

Im sure they will get round to it at some stage.

Same with the provisional league fixtures released last week. No sign of hurling
outside of Division 1.

Way to promote it.

Do the GAA want to promote it or not? I've criticised RTÉ in the past when they give all the intercounty football league results but only Div 1A & 1B in hurling.

Very same on the draw last night and the league fixtures last week.

It's as if below the top 12 counties doesn't exist.

can only really believe it now when I seen it on paper...only 5 teams in the leinster championship...hard to take...hard to look at..just brutal treatment of the so called weaker counties..whatever about the munster one, Kerry are only missing out and haven't been it it since 2004 I think...leinster is especially flawed...Westmeath, laois, Carlow, meath should be up in arms...offaly are in it...why not these,,,,. and not even a draw made for them either,,,looks like it gone by the wayside like the Christy ring cup now....Antrim is going to be cut off even further now too along with Kerry.

Bottom line is whether we like it or not the GAA doesn't give a monkeys about weaker counties as they don't bring in revenue. Its that simple.

No, I think they routinely ignore Div 3 and 4 in football as well. The only time they ever seem to bother with those is if there are fixtures taking place on the Saturday, and for a couple of years there where Kilkenny were in Div 4, so there was a total of nine teams in the division, meaning there were additional game weeks, so there was no "clash" with Div 1 and 2.

I'm not much a fan of this system either, but how is it different than the structure we had up to this year, for Leinster and 2nd tier counties? The Leinster championship still only had 5 teams this year, with the top 2 from the round robin group going on to a Leinster quarter-final (but neither actually getting promoted).

Actually, isn't the new structure better for Leinster teams in the tier 2 group? Up to this year, there was no automatic promotion to the Leinster championship, now there will be. And now, instead of going into a Leinster QF, the top 2 from that group go in at a stage where they are only 1 game away from an AI Quarter-final.

From what I've seen, the overtures coming from tier 2 Leinster counties have been positive regarding to the new structure. And I can see why.

Some good points, Marlon.

Some people always have a negative attitude. The fact the draw hasn't taken place I suspect is twofold 1 Will this be the Christy Ring Cup or Joe Mcdonagh?2 There will be five rounds in the competition to get to a final promised to be Leinster or Munster final day. They also have to fix these preliminary All Ireland quarter finals.Despite not being in Leinster it has to be a big incentive to have a home tie to reach an All Ireland quarter final with your final in Thurlestone or Croker.

Marlon the original plan was to stop the tier 2 counties from playing in the McCarthy cup.

It was only the last minute amendment that allowed the 2 top teams in.

This was positive for the counties but it doesn't alter the fact that the tier 2 counties are treated terribly by the powers that be.

It may seem a small point that the draw for the tier 2 teams wasn't made with the rest but for me it sums up the idea that tier 2 is an afterthought

Laois and Westmeath are better than Offaly
and I'd argue that either of them would have beaten the Dubs in 2017 if they hadn't been kept apart in the qualifier draw

sorry, meant to say Westmeath would have beaten the Dubs. Not Laois, who lost to them in July!

Reason there was no fixtures draw Thursday night was because they were just the provincial draws. The second tier group is not part of any province. Still I suppose central Council could have done the draw to make it coincide with the provincial draws.

The non publication of hurling league fixtures outside of division 1 is inexcusable alright.

Laois Offaly carlow Westmeath are at the same level.

Dublin beat laois in 2017 after they snuck past carlow by a point

You could probably add Kerry, Antrim & maybe Meath to that list.

Kerry definitely at that level, most improved hurling county in the last 10 years.

Meath a little behind those with Laois a little ahead.

But it should be a competitive group

Laois may only beat Carlow by a point but they were missing about eight first team regulars due to injury and suspension. Plus they played 55 mins of that game with 14 men.

Carlow had been celebrating the ring cup win the week before and had their own share of injuries and a late sending off.

Laois are a bit ahead of us at the moment but we have a strong young team.

Sunday week could be interesting between the club champions.

Is there a round robin system for the Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lori Meagher cups, in the Leinster and Munster championship you can lose 2 games and still qualify in 2nd place and continue in the championship, in the lower tier competitions you lose 2 games and you are out

Fairly sure its all round robin next year which will guarantee more matches.
Only disadvantage is there can be dead rubber matches in the last round.
