What we need it the 2nd coming of Jesus....at the wedding in Cana, he turned water into wine, so here's hoping he might be able to turn the County Team into footballers. cavanblueman (Cavan) - Posts: 636 - 23/10/2017 11:08:50 2057175 Link 1 |
cavanblueman (Cavan) - Posts:198 - 23/10/2017 11:08:50 We don't for now have the luxury of playing about with players with the championship in mind we have to concentrate on the league consolidate or get promotion one or the other and then maybe give the championship a lash but now priority has to be the League. As for the 1997 team I believe our 2002 team were far better. This is my opinion thats all. The best point ever scored in Clones was the Cavan wide in 1997. I was there I saw it as did several thousands Cavan supporters. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4601 - 23/10/2017 12:53:17 2057211 Link 0 |

No No lets go with this. He is trying to coorelate a wide in 1997 to the decline of Cavan football albeit a purple patch in 2002 where we got our hammered in the league final by getting to the Division 1 final from the second tier and being beat by Donegal in the preliminary round.

Have to agree here. last year if the Division 1 teams played to their full strength and ability we would have been cannon fodder. That's the reality. It happens every year in Division 1 that teams go up and cant compete. Down and Derry suffered similar fate recently. The only difference is that they actually try and play direct football instead of this defensive lateral stuff. Sean claimed we scored the best point in Clones when we got the rub of the green in 97 but we played great football under McHugh. For 3 years we played fast attacking football that was a joy to watch. We operated in Division 1 for 2 seasons. We did struggle but we played attractive exciting football. Now that's all gone. However, talk to those players. Ask them when was the best football they played? I know the answer. Fast Forward 2017, Ask the same question to the current crop. Let these guys play football. I honestly don't know how to rate some players now because they are playing inside themselves. They have been trained to defend, defend, defend, recycle the ball and build up slowly. Ulster has fallen into the trap of this crap and fair play to the Downs and Derry's who for most of the time refuse to play it. Id rather be down in the lower divisions and watch Cavan play open football and let guys develop and re programme how to play the game than another season of hold onto the ball and get everybody back. Cavan football will never flourish under this system. its fed down to club football now and its diabolical to watch and to play. Look at the minors this year. A breath of fresh air. I hope they are not ruined by this system as other players have gone before.

It's the culture of teams in Ulster. Tyrone and Armagh early 2000s was based on defence. Peter Donnelly was part of 2008 squad with Tyrone as a player, came to Cavan shortly after as coach for schools and development squads. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2751 - 23/10/2017 16:07:25 2057280 Link 0 |
Rumours coming out of the county set up that 52 lads were called up but only 26 turned up to the first meeting. McDermott, Mackey, Johnstone and several other lads who have been around for years have opted out apparently. Not looking good for the year ahead. Down belong in the (small) bracket of teams who play open attacking football. .but Derry!??? They are probably the only team I've ever seen attempt to stifle a game of football more than Donegal did in the 2011 All ireland semi final. Dublin have killed the midfield battle with their short kickouts to unmarked corner backs. Kerry's goalkeeper kicked the ball over his own end line in their last outing. Mayo's defence is the cornerstone of their (relative) success of recent years. And Tyrone played 1 man in their opponents half in their last game. It's not just Cavan who play a conservative game. It's just about every county in Ireland apart from Down, Galway and one or two of the weaker ones. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4974 - 23/10/2017 17:01:53 2057299 Link 0 |

Johnston wouldn't be training with the county while the Gaels are still playing. Neither would any other Gaels players

Ah Sean, inaroundehouse isnt bothered about being accurate in anything he claims as a fact. That being said I wouldn't agree the 2002 team were as good as the 97 team. No way.

Ok, but I think he was the only Gaels lad on the long list of experienced players I was given. I forgot the rest the last time but now remember that it also included McEnroe, Corr, Rory Dunne, and Martin Reilly.

Paul Graham,Barry Fortune,Ciaran Flynn are the other Gaels players who have being called in.two of them are going in.one maybe not. gaelsutd (Cavan) - Posts: 602 - 24/10/2017 11:43:24 2057489 Link 0 |
It wasn't a training session. It was a meeting to discuss the year ahead. Even injured players can attend a meeting. All of those lads I named did not attend the meeting, which you would have to assume means that at this moment in time at least, they are not intending to play for Cavan next year.
