Game shouldn't be over until the ball goes dead?

I was watching a ladies football match one day,(not that I recommend it) but there were 2 minutes left and one team was winning by a point and they won a free. No injuries were involved in the incident but between one thing and another it took over 90 seconds for the free to be taken which was then kicked wide. It took a further 40 seconds for the opposition goalkeeper to retrieve the ball and take the kick out. This was 130 seconds of play which was wasted and the hooter went as the kickout was in the air. Nothing the referee could do about the 90 seconds wasted by the free taker or the 40 seconds wasted because the team in the lead stopped the goalkeeper from getting the ball back quickly. Its a bad idea and would encourage more cynical play"
The ladies model is not correct. Ball in play is the option.

Ball in play option would also be a disaster. In an average 30 minute half of hurling or football the ball is only in play for about 20 mins. So you could be looking at 45 mins to play a 30 minute game of football.

just like basketball, they have had to tenths of seconds to the game clock given the amount of dead ball situations, but they do allow the game to continue until ball becomes a dead ball. But yes look at the NBA I have seen the last two minutes run for 15 minutes!!!!

In the Longford Senior Hurling Final on Sunday the ball went dead & the ref blew the full-time whistle even though the umpire had raised his arm for a '65 for Slashers. Slashers lost by one point. Anyone ever seen this (or '45 in football) happen before???

Exactly. You are paying to watch 20 minutes of play. Make them 25 minutes halves of actual play and any deliberate delay of game penalized.
