What's people's thoughts on poty. Personally I think it had to be Mc carthy. He made the big plays in the clutch moments for Dublin. Andy Moran was not even on the pitch for the last 15 mins of the final, and was also taken off in the majority of Mayo games. He was sitting on the bench when Derry, Cork and Roscommon games were in the melting pot also. I think poty is for the players who make the big impact when needed and Mc carthy certainly did that. Andy Moran was brilliant as well, but wasn't der in the real big moments for me. ryan (Donegal) - Posts: 724 - 29/09/2017 22:36:48 2051821 Link 2 |

James McCarthy. Outstanding in all games. Scores goals, points , wins tough ball and drives a team to victory. poguemahone (Dublin) - Posts: 365 - 30/09/2017 10:05:42 2051877 Link 0 |
I actually hope Andy Moran wins it, if the last week and media narrative has thought Dublin anything it is that not engaging with media, hype or glitz and glamour is the right pathway toward success for Dublin. The conclave serves Dublin well and winning a pony show isn't conducive to it. Its all about the team. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 30/09/2017 10:11:03 2051878 Link 1 |
With 3-24 from play in this years championship it has to be Andy Moran. Greengrass (Louth) - Posts: 6031 - 30/09/2017 12:11:32 2051904 Link 0 |
Coin flip Moran and MCCarty , thought Kilkenny was a candidate but quite final put paid to that Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 30/09/2017 12:39:02 2051910 Link 0 |
So difficult to call. Two players with completely different roles for their teams. I'll say McCarthy for his impact in getting Dublin over the line in the final. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2385 - 30/09/2017 13:51:48 2051920 Link 0 |
Definitely between Moran and McCarthy, hard one to call. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1873 - 30/09/2017 14:14:57 2051924 Link 0 |
Is it the players that vote ? If so I'd say Moran is a dead cert

With the emphasis on the 'team' rather than the individual there has been no standout candidate among the top teams. Moran had a good first half in the final; McCarthy had a poor first half but a good second half. As it seems to be down to a choice between them, I would go with Moran as he 'carried' the Mayo forward line through much of the c'ship. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 30/09/2017 17:55:23 2051972 Link 0 |
Andy M had a great year, finally given Mayo that marquee forward performance that many critics thought they lacked. I would though say that most of the top teams have at least one forward who stepped up to score for their teams. Dublin for instance had O Callaghan and Rock who both scored at will throughout the championship. However Dublin never really struggled getting to the final, this was taken for granted. James Mc I felt showed all the great attributes of the game. Going back to Mayo SF replay in 2015, he scored an inspiring point that began to swing things in favour of Dublin. When Dublin got the lead, it was he who dictated possession and gave the Dublin that much lauded composure we hear about to see the game out. He done the same in the final v Kerry. In the scrappy chaotic last mintues, he was the one emerging out with the ball. This year he was even more effective in a more offensive role. Set the tone in the Leinster final and in the SF v Tyrone. Set the tone at the start of the second half when Dublin needed an injection to get going. Continued to the end and ultimately , in a very tight game, pushed his team to land the title. To me a worthy POTY - encompassing all the skills of a great GAA player. poguemahone (Dublin) - Posts: 365 - 30/09/2017 18:41:26 2051976 Link 0 |
No other county had a forward that scored a ridiculous 3-24 from play though. Moran was outstanding and deserves to be in the discussion. I would agree that McCarthy is a worthy winner though. He put in motm performances in almost every game and when Mayo put Dublin under serious pressure in the final he seemed to be the driving force keeping his team in it and a major reason Dublin got over the line again. Andy Moran for me. Had his best year ever as a forward. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13705 - 30/09/2017 19:30:49 2051982 Link 1 |

If Con O'Callaghan wasn't a shoe in for young player he could make a case, All Ireland Club Hurling Championship winner, All Under 21 football Winner, Senior Leinster Championship football winner, All Ireland Senior Football Championship winner. It is a remarkable achievement by Con but for footballer player of the year, only senior football will be taken into consideration and Andy will get it over Con, Andy played outstanding football all year and his scoring was awesome. fainleog (Limerick) - Posts: 598 - 30/09/2017 20:26:01 2052003 Link 0 |
Disagree on lee keegan deservedly getting poty he was never poty last year. If Andy Moran gets it this year I'll have no problem with it , he comes across as a sound man and he had a great year , my only moan would be he had some great games against teams Dublin would beat out the gate but tbf he had great games against Kerry (twice) and us so no problem from me. But any other team to win Sam 3 years in a row and not have a poty tells you its own story.

Dublin are a great team with great players but there probably isn't one standout player above all others on the team over the last few years.

No they didn't but then again, no Dublin, Kerry or Tyrone player got to play so many games :)
