Tommy Lyons 2002

(Oldest Posts First)

Keith Duggan in today's Times reckons Tommy Lyons hit the nail on the head way back in 2002 " The country by and large loves Dublin to be there or thereabouts but don't want them winning anything. They like to keep them in isolation and that is what's happened. That's our tribal warfare and that's what keeps our association thriving."
So the country by and large love the big Dublin days in Croker as long as the Dubs don't win, near enough accurate I think. With all due respect to current hurling champs Galway, the Dubs are the dominant image on the GAA agenda these days and a lot of country folk are struggling with this.

gaa needs us to at least get to the semi final every year..this is no secret..a couple of replays would be no harm..and us winning leinster is also a positive thing for them

Why does the GAA "need" Dublin to get to the semi-final every year? And what would happen if they didn't?

financially...gates from attendances would go down....us getting to a semi gurantees a sell out pretty much..what other semi finals can draw a sell out?

I don't think it's a necessity but it does help the accounts. Without the dubs in a semi i'm fairly sure that the association would still be making a profit. Greed is the reason that the GAA wants the Dubs to make a semi each year.

Anyway I can't see you not making a semi for the next few years so we won't have to worry.

As for the original post I disagree entirely. I always like to see the Dubs do well. Dublin people are good, decent skins. I like to see them get over the line.

I love the stereotype a lot of Dublin fans seem to have that the country folk all hate them. It's hilarious really.

I was thinking to myself the lastest criticism of this dublin team is coming from their own, Kimmage and Dunphy yet no its all the country folk hate Dublin, imagine the outrage if both the above were "country folk"

I like and enjoy watching this dublin team, compared to the dublin team that came before it under pillar who were the most hateful shower I ever came across.

It's funny looking at the comments though. It's like you were shouting for May in the final so you hate us, eh no it's just like Mayo haven't won in quite a long time and it would mean so much to them, stop taking things so seriously like!

To be honest until recently of course Dublin were the England equivalent. They built up a massive hype nearly every year, walking through the naughties with 6 Leinster titles and Zero All-Ireland's and year after year being tipped for Sam by the Media and never lived up to expectations.

Now they have the personnel and facilities to go and start winning they are starting to prove their point and dominance on the game. Although there were unfortunate players between 95 and 2011 that got their hands on Sam. Playing a fantastic brand of football. All this nonsense of separating Dublin etc should be scrapped. No one complained when they weren't winning anything. I'm near sure the same questions were asked of Kerry after a spell of dominance.

its nothing got to do with the jersey or the people in it. I love the dubs they're a great bit of craic. same as Mayo people etc etc. the point about always wanting them at arms length is wrong because a lot of people took joy in Dublin winning in 2011 including myself, why? simply because they hadn't won it in so long and it was great to see a new team come along.
the other thing about the GAA needing dublin for attendance is way over played too because if you had 5-6 teams in leinster all of the same level with a chance of winning attendance would be 10 times higher than currently!! so you wouldn't ''need'' dublin to keep the thing afloat. in fact i don't even know how the leinster attendance is as good as it is.

Of course it's not a necessity but let's not pretend that it's not in the gaas interest for us to be going well
